Hi all,
I know there are proberly hundreds of posts on this but there are some question i need clarified.
I currently have a 81 SJ40 which has a dead 4ac corolla engine setup in it. I have got a G16B and 1.3 gearbox on the way as well as extractors and prop shafts and some ancillary stuff for the engine. From what i have read it seems as though it will take some time and engineering. I have some questions and if anyone could send some answers or experiences on this type of build it would help a lot. I should point out that I am a HD mechanic and this car will be kind of an extreme bush basher and will never be registered but still want it to be to a high level of engineering.
1). Will a spring over setup and body lift allow the use of the 1.6 sump or does it have to use the 1.3 sump?
2). Do i need to use a 1.3 clutch and flywheel?
3). Is it fairly easy to fab up some engine mounts, anyone done this?
4). I am using the 1.0 L t case , anyone had experience mixing and matching shaft and flanges to make this work?
5). Can i still use the tiny prop shafts from the 1.0L or should i get bigger ones
6). should i upgrade the front drums to 1.3 drive and disc's, anyone got some sitting around they want to sell?
7). Anything else you guys could think of?

I will be doing a big write up as i progress through it, I am living on the Tiwi Islands so parts and materials are not always on hand and i know it will take some time. I really do appreciate the time anyone spends on these answers.

Cheers
David

1). Will a spring over setup and body lift allow the use of the 1.6 sump or does it have to use the 1.3 sump? Without a lot of bump stop spacing you will need the 1.3l sump. Don't do a spring over conversion.
2). Do i need to use a 1.3 clutch and flywheel?If you're using a sierra gearbox, yes.
3). Is it fairly easy to fab up some engine mounts, anyone done this?Very easy.
4). I am using the 1.0 L t case , anyone had experience mixing and matching shaft and flanges to make this work?stock 1.3l jack shaft will work with a flange swap on the transfer
5). Can i still use the tiny prop shafts from the 1.0L or should i get bigger onesThe shafts themselves are quite strong as they're solid, think of where a tubular tailshaft necks down for the slip joint, these are as thick as any of those. You might run into uni joint strength issues though. Even if you swap to 1.3l shafts (which have bigger unis) then you might have issues with uni joint strength. Depends on how hard you drive it.
6). should i upgrade the front drums to 1.3 drive and disc's, anyone got some sitting around they want to sell? It's best to upgrade to complete WT sierra diffs. You can't get lockers or chromo axles for 1l diffs. To fit the WT diffs you'l need to weld on some new spring perches. If you just want to run 1l diffs then the disc setup all bolts on. You can also put 1.3l NT CVs and axles in for a strength upgrade. The discs are light years better than the drums.
7). Anything else you guys could think of?Gearbox needs new mounts made to fit and will probably need some hammer work to the tunnel to fit. Also you'l need a body lift or a 1.3l bonnet to clear the G16b. They're quite a bit taller than a 1l or 1.3l.
