Just thought I'd throw a post up regarding the engine air filter I just changed out of my XL-7-> the part number on it was WA5006 (enough said, you can work out the rest ;) ). I found that there was some evidence of dust leaking past the filter's rubber edge gasket :x .

The replacement filter (a different brand) had a significantly thicker edge gasket.

I've had the same issue with panel filters in other cars. If you're not careful when putting the lid on you can actually pull the seal off the edge of the filter. Makes you cringe when you see the dust in the intake pipe tho 8O

With this filter it was purely a case of the seal being undersized.

You usually get what you pay for when it comes to filters, cheaper is not always better

I never go for the cheapest brand. This brand is actually recommended by quite a few people as being decent.

I've also had interesting experiences with so called "premium aftermarket" oil filters, made by a company starting with R..... They caused increased timing chain rattle and I discovered two distinctly different internal construction filters were sold by them under the same part number. One was worse than the other, but it was pot luck what you ended up with.
