Hi All,

I know a few people have turboed there G16a. I have mine all running and what not. Just looking to see if anyone has a guide to how much the timing should be retarded to combat the turbo.

G16A with TD04, Standard ignition and dizzy. Using Renault G5 Carby and 3" exhaust (No cat, no muffler).

I know standard 8 degree advance and I am running 4 degree advanced but this is only a guess, I never have know how to time correctly with carby turbo.

Thanks

Id be seriously be considering a dyno, get the best result, and safest.

I think the bigger problem Suziblu is the ignition advance curve - whether on a dyno or not, it has to be either locked, or somehow managed to retard timing under boost, which isn't possible with the standard distributor.

IMHO this is the biggest hurdle with "simple" carby turbo conversions, and what leads to melted motors.

Steve, I agree, but as far as I know, a dyno will be run by someone with a great deal of knowledge, and, set it up properly.

I know if I had gone to that much trouble, its off to the dyno, when I get my carbs on, it will be set up on a dyno.

I know a lot of people do not like MSD, but they and others like them, have systems set up for boosted engines, with programmable curves.

All true, but dropping lots of $ on custom curves/msd gear doesn't seem to match the level of the rest of the build.

Sounds like a recipe for disaster.

You need a way to tune the ignition curve or its not going to go well. Locking the dizzy at say 5deg might be a good way to get it to run well at WOT but it will run poorly at partial throttle and off boost where the vacuum advance usually kicks in.

Id buy a cheap ecu to tune, a knock sensor and a pair of headohones to make a diy knock listening device. I plugged a nissan knock sensor directly into my laptops mic input and listened for knock using headphones while tuning the ignition on g13a using a $200 haltech. The knock headphones worked alot better than I expected.
