G'day -

I removed the cap and went to tap the Tcase breather and found that it is quite different to the diff breathers - Do you just drill out the ole and tap it, or is there another way?
I have a 1/8th bsp tap, would that do? If so, what size hole do I need to drill for it?

Also, do i need a 90degree barb, or will a straight one be ok?

That breather has a splash gaurd on the inside of the case. I was still able to tap mine out OK though. I used a T fitting on mine, one goes to the rear diff the other goes to the breather in the engine bay.

Will a straight barb fit though, or should i get a 90 degree one?

Go a 90deg barb it proberly won't fit other wise, and have a look on the side of your tap and it should tell you the thread depth, just take the depth of the thread off the size of drill bit. For an alloy i go 0.5-1mm smaller so the tap gets a good thread in it...

That's not the thread depth on the tap but the pitch. It only works with metric taps that you subtract the pitch from the diameter to get tapping size.

You shouldn't just take a bit extra off the tapping size to get a good thread. It just doesn't work like that. You will end up bottoming out the minor diameter of the tap in the hole, then it just chews up and makes a mess, especially in aluminum. Use the correct size as specified, with a decent cutting compound and you shouldn't have any problems.

hay lumpy i have 10mm clear, food grade hose that i got from a hardware shop. i just flicked the breather off and put the
hose over the stickie outie bit and then held it on with a cable tie. then using a T joiner, taped into the
rear diff breather. soundes dodgy but has lasted for 2 wet seasons so far.

I Devcon'd a 1/4 drive 12mm socket over the bit on the transfer after removing the cap.. Hose goes over socket nicely.
No tapping. No mess.

Do you swear every time you cant find a 12mm socket now

I've got a bucket full of odd sockets, ratchets, spanners etc.
Socket just happened to be the perfect fit for breather.

My transfer case is imperial though...
