Hiya all........so I was wondering what most people do if and when there Automatic in their Jimny should shit itself? Another second hand Auto or install a Manual box?
I rang a local suzi wrecker and he said his s/h autos are around 2grand but he could change my car over to a manual with a heavy duty clutch for approx $2500 and then I wouldnt have the problem with the weak trans behind my m18a.
Im concerned that my auto may one day die but for now its ok...a manual would be fine with me.

Sorry not much help.. But 2grand for a auto? That's what I payed for my whole jimny and its auto.....

I reckon make an effort not to kill the one that's already in it.

For offroad, you'd be crazy going to a HD clutched manual from an auto.

Big Trans Cooler and a temp gauge will go a long way towards this!

late last year I was quoted $1,300 for a transfer case out of a 2010 auto Jimny from a wreaker in Sydney.
I was looking for a 'cheap' gearing reduction for my manual Jimny and laughed when he gave me the price.I said I didn't want the whole drive train, just the transfer case. The guy was serious...

You can pay upwards of $1,000 just for the manual box from a wrecker. I'd still choose auto over manual any day but I'm getting old and lazy. Don't think the manual boxes are any stronger than the autos

I found out today that it may be possible to install a Vitara auto into my jimny? Has anyone heard about this? Can they be strengthened to handle more torque?

They already r they are ran behind v8 jeeps

It won't be easy. I think there is ONE application for an AW-4 behind an M motor- NGV swb 1.6 auto. But yes, an AW-4 will laugh at your m18.

It's easier with a g engined jimny as the aw-4 was native behind g16 engines.

Well thats great to know mate...any idea where I can get some more definate information because if the AW4 is much stronger,then thats what I want,perhaps it may also have a more definate shift as well,mines always had a sort of sluggish shift between gears even when the m13a was in front of it.

TEKNO, in the short term, you're probably better off just getting the auto oil flushed and a filter change done. Then fit an external cooler as a minimum. This will keep the current auto going till you can sort another solution out

So I am curious as to how to get a AW4 trans into a Jimny. I would love to keep mine an auto but if it does fail,and keeps failing then I would be better off getting someone to install this AW4 instead of buying second hand jimny autos all the time!..I rang a few different Suzi wreckers and would you believe they both said "i've never heard of a AW4 transmission" REALLY!!!!
Surely somebody knows how this can be done and of course where it can be done for future reference,and from all accounts,after researching I found that the AW4 is very strong as its used in jeeps I believe.
And of course this is for future reference as I dont want to be stranded should mine fail,this way I can source what needs to be done and keep it handy if and when mine does go boom and get it sorted,simples.
Im actually surprised after sending emails to the uk and other various places that no-one knows how to strengthen the Jimny A174 trans or that theres no "kits" available. These cars have been popular for a long time now and you would have thought that somebody in the modifying scene would have come up with something by now! Its a mystery

Wreckers are often like that. You need to be more specific and request a 4 speed auto from a vitara. You would also need to tell them the model years.
Since you are unlikely to find the aw4 that mates to the M16 from the NGV swb, and you will be forging new ground adapting a g16/j20 aw4 to an M motor, you could even look at jeep aw4. They will almost certainly have a different bellhousing and bolt pattern but you will be making a custom adapter anyway. It may or may not be possible but we all need pioneering people like yourself to just give it a go.

It is common knowledge, at least on this forum, that the Jimny autos are already maxed out behind the 1.3.
