Hi all I've read some really good tech stuff on this topic from Auszookers but I've got a specific question on using the Mazda 323 dissy cap and rotor button on a Mk 2/3 G13B twin cam dissy. I understand all the clearance issues and if I had a lazy $400+ I’d buy the right angle drive kit but for the moment I’ll have to stick with the 323 dissy cap. I've got the dissy cap side of things organised but I’m having trouble with the rotor button. The standard Swift button won’t clear the inside of the cap and the 323 rotor button is made for a dissy with a larger shaft diameter. Am I missing something or is there a mod I need to do to the rotor to allow for the narrower shaft size? Cheers Ryan

Based on my limited knowledge on GTi stuff from searching, Only the MK1 motor can use the right angle drive kit. MK2/3 motors use the mazda cap mod. Result from a search on the mazda cap - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=7416

Thanks blkfxx. You can sort out a right angle drive for either depending on the donor dissy. ( no crank angle sensor for mk1, crank angle sensor required mark 2/3) but I'm still stuck with the rotor button prob Cheers

you need the brass bush out of the centre of the GTI rotor, and press it into the centre of the 323 rotor. pay attention as to which way the keyway is facing on the old one and make sure it goes in the same on the new one. i found the easiest way to get the bush out was with fire. plastic melts away, the brass didnt

That's a shame. Pretty much guarantees the car won't ever be registered again as it deletes the heater fan and demister.

Yep I agree steve, its not the best solution but I was having trouble finding info on the rotor button problem, I've had a look at the facebook thread that Chris posted and I understand how to get around it now. In saying this i'm still not sold on the 323 mod. I was fairly confident that after a lot of measuring the hole would miss the fan and heater box inlet/outlet but my plan way to drop the engine in less the flywheel (for quick fitting) and check my measurements from the centre of the dissy shaft to the fire wall. Having said that after reading the thread im pretty keen to look at moving the motor and gearbox forward 25mm which bassed on the different heights between the two dissy caps should get the job done. Sunday is the day so i'll post my results hopefully Monday Thanks for the extra info

Ryan, I've done the 323 button on the GTI dizzy hack as an interim measure, accepting that it will be a pain when I need to change the rotor button or the cap as I will effectively have to pull the motor out (or at least move it forward a few inches). That said, I ran the car daily for six months last summer and it hasn't missed a beat since I set the timing. I think with the electronic ignition the wear on the dizzy cap and rotor contacts is minimized, so it may well run fine for a few years. In the meantime I'll keep thinking about a more enduring solution that I can work towards when necessary.
