Hello all

I'm inexperienced when it comes to engine conversions and I'm not confident in pulling my little zook completely to pieces yet. I figured putting a 5 speed gearbox would help my cause when looking for better cruising capabilities.

Does the 5 speed mesh up to the 1 litre engine or do I have to get an adapter plate, if that is the case where can I find one?

Also its the type 3, so the 5 speed should fit in the transmission tunnel.

You need a 1.3 gearbox, and you basically re-case the 1.3 box with the front 1/2 of the type 3 1.0 box.

However if your car is otherwise standard I doubt you will be able to use 5th gear much. Suzuki didn't put 5speeds in them for a reason.

If you have not much experience in changing a box over i doubt you will have the skills to make a 5 speed 1 litre box. I have done one myself, takes time and abit of patience and a decent shop press and press tools.

Your best option is finding some one who's selling a box that has already been done. They do pop up now and then.

Gwagensteve the 5 speed in these are a great upgrade as 1st gear is a lower ratio and at 80km the revs are about the same as 4th at 60km. Just that bit nicer for cruising.

I'm completely across the lower 1st gear, and that's great. It won't magically make a 1.0 a 100km/h touring car, the engine doesn't have enough torque at, say 4K.

Fair enough, and thanks. Wasn't particularly after a faster vehicle, just less strain on the engine to cruise at say 90ks. And just because I'm inexperienced doesn't make me completely incapable of doing something, I'd just take forever. Afterall where does experience come from?

There is a maruti where I live that has a stock 1.0 and has a 5 speed. Also rolls on 750r15 bar treads and it gets allong well on the highway. 5th made a fair bit if difference according to the owner.

The best way to get experience is one small step at a time, preferable with guidance from someone who has experience and who can be physically present - if not things can get very expensive, very rapidly.

Just for the heck of it - let's say your experience in water is limited to the kiddies wading pool when you were a child, do you think that prepares you to jump in "at the deep end"? Would you take forever or would you just drown? There is a parallel here, and it is that you risk ending up with two transmissions in pieces that never get back together.

We're not here to judge you or your skill & experience level, but those of us who have faced the challenges know what it takes, and will caution the newcomers - you've been told, it's not a "bolt up" deal - you say you lack experience, all we're doing is trying to guide you.
