Im chasing some help and with the guys on here being very knowledgeable im sure ill get an answer.

im running the h27 v6 engine in the buggy. its alternator is massive and I cant imagine it needs to be that big for what ill be doing.

I need to find a smaller diameter and or shorter alternator that will charge enough for what I need.

Ill be running no headlights, maybe an LED light bar and led rock lights when out at night.
led Brake lights, no indictors. very few electrical things at all.

how much charging will I need and does any one know of a good candidate???

I reckon you'll still about 50A minimum. Remember it's not peak delivery (@3000rpm with a cold alternator) that's the issue, it's all the time you're spending at idle when the alternator is putting out next to nothing and you're still rocking the light bar, thermo (?) and 15A of base EFI load (computer/injectors/fuel pump etc.

Most small EFI fwd cars will have fairly compact alternators.

The diahatsu 1.0 sirion one looks really small. 70amp which looks to be easily enough.

the xl-7 one just is super bulky. 160mm across and 180mm long

If you want to do some research, refer to the Bosch Aust. alternator & starter catalogues.

Refer to the visual selection guide pages and you can compare output at 1800 alternator RPM versus 6000 alternator RPM, compare sizes, mounting details, plug types etc.

Latest I could find (but it doesn't have a few things the older catalogue I downloaded once had)
http://aa-bosch-ecat-ap.resource.bosch. ... alogue.pdf

This is an older version with more of the aftermarket alternators in it's visual guide.
http://www.industrialbearings.com.au/up ... rnator.pdf

These catalogues have a bit of general alternator technical information you might find useful too.

permanent magnet 14amps, 12v kick in at 500rpm and 82mm deep including pulley

That thing is sweet, almost tempted to have one just for giggles in the glovebox

14A wouldn't run the motor let alone any accessories though.

Not a H27 for sure, a 16v g16 alt is 55a they are pretty small, no idea if it would work for Tanshi?

As for 14A on 1.3l 8v it could possibly work as a limp mode without any accesories. I remember looking up on google what current they needed to run fairly recently. Suzuki-Forums.com provided me with this.
Quote:
I measured some currents today on a charged battery and warm engine at idle, stock '93 Samurai electrical system (but not for much longer).
11.5A out of the alternator, 5.5A into the battery, giving about 6A for the rest of the vehicle, including EFI (lights and radio off).
On low beam, about 22A out of the alternator, 4.5A into the battery
On high beam, about 25A out of the alternator, 4.5A into the battery (using H6024 halogen sealed beams)

The meter was a Tenma 72-6185, calibration date uncertain. Readings were averaged by eye. So take these numbers with a grain of salt.

Thread here

That's pretty impressive and considering its a TBi with injector, ECu & Fuel pump i can only assume carburettor run a lot less than 6A

Also whilst trying to find that thread again i stumbled upon another Thread where the guy has measured his 1l TBi Geo Metro (suzuki swift) and measured 90w draw @2500rpm for the engine. (7.5A? Again less for Carb)

So no accessories & keeping the revs at 3500rpm or lower. Might eventually kill your battery, definitely not a permanent replacement but i can think of some applications where it would be desirable.
