Pulled the gearbox today and found this nice looking pilot bearing sitting there.

I haven't attempted to pull it yet, but I can already see the inner race and bearings getting pulled out and the outer race staying in.

Is there a specific tool or trick I can use to get it out without removing the flywheel?

Also can new ones just be tapped in with a socket?

Someone better versed in the removal of these than I am will come up with better suggestions but u have use the hydraulic method to remove difficult ones before.

Method is,

Pack the cavity out with grease.

Get a drift or steel rod or something that fits snugly into the centre hole.

Give the drift/rod a firm whack. It build up the pressure behind the bearing and can force it outward.

Failing this, the right size pry bar may get the outer race out. Putting a notch into the outer race and tapping it with a drift, rotating it a bit, might help loosen its grip also.

Repco sell a good pilot bearing removal tool. Will get a photo of mine in the morning

They can be tricky,make sure you take your time so as not to damage crank.

If its really stubborn and you cant pry it out easily

Remove the flywheel
Tap the bearing out with a socket
Tap near bearing in with a socket
Reinstall flywheel

Can you reuse these flywheel bots or are they torque to yield? Anyone had issues reusing them?

I have never had an issue reusing them in 3 instances. (clutch replacement on two cars and an engine swap)
There is a specified torque for them in the FSM.

78 N.m (7.8 kg-m, 56.5 lb-ft)

In the flywheel luckily. Was able to tap the race out with a socket and dead blow easily.

That's interesting,all the ones i've done sit in the end of the crank,i didn't know Suzuki fitted them in the Flywheel.

Another way to get bearings out of a blind hole is to smash out the inner race and balls, Weld the inside of the outer race, It will almost fall out if you don't weld the outer race to what's holding it..

I find filling the cavity with white bread better than using grease on the ones I've done.

i use wet paper, grease isnt very effective ... but suzuki dont need this kind of bearing removal , except older ones 800cc and prior with the needle roller in the end of the crankshaft.

The amount of people blown away by the wet paper method .

Done this a couple of times
Use CRC and get a 10 mm x 175 dynabolt .Put the dynabolt into the hole and expand it, then use a claw hammer and a block of wood to pull it out has worked every time so far.
