92 punctured it's fuel tank at Glasshouse the other night and after replacing with 2nd hand tank it wont idle and it stinks. Runs well over 3000..Removed and replaced fuel filter twice but still the same. There was a LOT of crap in the filter despite flushing the tank but some of it could have been in there for ages. There was also water in the filter. Any thoughts.. My thoughts are crap in the low speed idle jet but I have NO idea about these carbies.. Do they even have a float bowl.. Can't see one... Any thoughts would be appreciated.. It is #2s sons only car....Cheers..

Anytime I've replaced tanks I have issues with crap getting brought through from the replacement tank.
Blow all lines out as best as possible with compressed air. Replace filters. Before installing replacement tank, rinse out with fuel.. inspect tank and see what the inside is like. Blow out the pickup line..
Yes you love likely got some blocked jets.
Cold motor, remove the two brass plugs on the lower part of the float bowl. That's on the forward part of the carby underneath the fuel intake. I try find pic.
Fuel will pour out and empty the bowl, this requiring a cold motor.
Remove the jets with a flat head screwdriver..

So do the jets just unscrew and fall out those 2 holes or do you need to strip the carbie to get into the float bowl ????? We pulled it enough to get a screw driver into the jets but the float is there and the jets are probably brass so magnets etc is not going to work.. Anyway we blew it all out and lots of small crap came out so we put it back together and it is still doing it so I suspect the idle jet is blocked and is going to have to come out ...Yes ????? and that means opening the top of carbie to get inside the bowl.. If that gasket tears we are up the creek till next week maybe week after... aaahhhhh....going 4x4ing at night is just @#$%&* stupid .......92 is broken a wont idle and wrangler has crushed SS snorkle head and cracked windscreen from almost rolling over... non of which would have happened if they had gone in the day time... ps... thanks BS for the pics... ... Your fingers look almost as battered as mine ..lol...

Nah no need to open the carby up. Lift the bowl and they should come out with the screw driver...
Might need to use a screw driver to lift the float through one hole and take the jet out the other hole

Ok... Thanks mate.. I will give that a go... My youngest son needs to realize that his big brother and all their friends that go playing in the mud at Glasshouses etc ALL have other cars so if their 4x4s get damaged it doesn't really matter because it is just their "toy" not their daily drive...He has just gone to mates to pick up spare carby BUT...it is in unknown condition and could easily have it's own problems so I would prefer to clean the jets in his first...

My son went to mates place and he chucked on a known good carby for him and its all sorted.. He will sort out the jets or just chuck it in his spares cupboard. Such a relief. Reassuring to know there are some good guys around who have the spirit that should be more widespread this time of year..Thanks again for you help BS.

As far as I know, you can only reach the main jets (primary & secondary mains) through those holes, the top of the carb has to be removed to reach the idle jet.

The one on the left (primary jet) affects the idle no??
I'm no carby wizard but when I lost idle it was due to the jet in the pic being very clearly blocked.. try those first before taking the top off?

The idle jet, apparently is totally blocked as NO fuel is coming out.. LOL.. That is why my friend gave us another that he knew was ok.. My son is soooooo excited to have his car running.. We have 8 cars and it is the only one with a carby and it is very different to the carbies I am used to from years ago.. I am hoping that after Christmas we have a cleanout of all our Zook parts.. They are everywhere.. We have a tobar, and a rear bumper as well as a heap of engine bits from the 1.6 upgrade.. It is starting to get to me.. Will make a list and post here after Christmas.. Also have a pile of stock rex parts..

On some carbs the primary main does feed the idle, but if the primary main is blocked the engine won't start because there is no fuel flow - with a blocked idle and a clear primary main you can get it started, but you'll have to give it some throttle to keep it running because it won't idle, a blocked idle will also affect low speed operation as there is some overlap between the idle & primary main jets at small throttle openings, and as the engine speed (actually airflow through the carb) increases, and the transition to the main completes, the engine will run better.

I had a slightly different experience, although credence to what your saying just keep it in mind that it could be either
Must have been my secondary jet that was 100% blocked and the primary just partial. I don't recall.
But it would idle fine, start and run at revs (for a while) but developed a large flat spot in the acceleration. That got worse throughout the journey until I lost all acceleration!! I still had idle and could still start it.
The above pic shows you the jet that was blocked..
But now you've got the carby off the car it's easy to crack open and have a look [emoji4]

My car had been sitting for quite some time before I got it and I had to strip the carb before it would run, and for many, many months after, I had issues with debris, I suspect from the fuel line - the tank had been dropped and flushed and a new filter fitted - clogging the primary main jet - the engine would just die completely. I kept spray carb cleaner and a screwdriver in the car and became quite adept at whipping the top of the carb off, flushing the jets backwards into the float bowl with the cleaner, wiping the float bowl out with a rag and reassembling - 5~10 minutes and I was rolling again.

Becomes quite the work of art when it's well practiced! I was doing the same with a Weber carby for a while.. it's unreal what crap comes out of fuel lines and tanks when there's an issue!!
Another method I've heard of (I've tried it but without much success on that occasion) is taking the hat off the carby, revving its guts out manually then using your hand to block the intake while keeping the throttle on. Allowing it to almost die then remove your hand..
It's supposed to create a large vacuum in the carby and suck fuel through aggressively with the aim to dislodge any gunk in the jets and suck them through. Anyone had any success doing this?

We also took the air filter thing off the top of the carby, swapped leads 2 and 3 over and stried to start causing a big backfire.. Apparently that may clean it out sometime but beware the big flame...LOL...

The idle jet cannot be accessed without removing the top of the carburettor. Its a jet about 1 1/12 inches long that screws into the main body and can be located next to the accelerator pump plunger when the carburettor top is removed {It has to flats on the top). It has a tiny tiny hole that bleeds air with the idle fuel to atomise and give a smooth idle. when the idle jet is blocked you can usually hear a slurping sort of noise as droplets of fuel (that is not atomised with air) are sucked into the manifold.
several ways as a temporary fix which sometimes work. As suggested swap 2 and 3 leads to cause a backfire. remove carburettor hat and the rod and use a rag or your hand and while holding at full throttle repeatedly choke the carby . remove the anti dieselling solenoid (which cuts fuel to the idle jet to stop engine run on after turning ignition off) and blow compressed air into orifice. also make sure the small o ring on the anti dieselling solenoid is intact and in good condition. If its missing or damaged this will cause poor/no idle.
Also make sure the anti dieselling solenoid makes an audible click when ignition is turned on .A non working anti dieselling solenoid will cause it not to idle. It could be there is no power supplied or a poor ground or just a faulty solenoid .
Failling all this then yes a decent carby clean is required and yes its a good idea to have a carby kit on hand as often the gasket gets damaged. Sometimes it doesnt but if you cant afford to be off the road too long its safe to have the parts available.
If Someone wants to donate me a carb i can do a full teardown and explanation for anyones future reference on every part and component.
