Out of curiousity a couple of weeks avo i rang up the local dealer for the price of recaro seat mounts for a vitara.

I was quoted $800 for two mounts. Impressive that the mounts are more expensive than the seats...

I figure at that price its cheaper to just make up my own bolted adaptor together to the existing mounts and show an engineer.

Well Recaro's are around $1200 each upwards, so I'm not sure where your buying yours if you're paying <$400 a seat, but tell me!

For that price Recaro are bearing the legality of the installation. Vitara mounts are large and complex, by all means make some yourself and take them to an engineer for approval- you might find the Recaro bases quite reasonably priced once you go through that process.

I have a couple of Recaro bases for various cars- an R50 mini and Impreza- I paid $400 for each of them.
