After performing perfectly for the past 10 yrs I cracked the rear housing on my TC the other weekend, so I picked up a 2nd hand case and this week I swapped the gears over into the 'new' case and reassembled it using new seals/gaskets but the old bearings which were ok. This is the first case I have rebuilt and I think I have followed the Trail Gear instructions completely but when I shake the case backwards and forwards there sounds like there is around 5mm movement of the Counter Shaft gear on the counter shaft. Everything meshes and turns nicely and there isnt enough movement that they unmesh, I have reinstalled the brass shims on either end of the counter shaft I am just concerned with the amount of movement it has.

Obviously it will be less noticeable once its got oil in it but I just wanted to know if movement of the counter shaft around 5mm is normal?

Are you 100% sure the brass washer didn't fall out of position during assembly?

Not 100%, the washer was greased in place and sitting there but I wasnt watching it when I was putting the halves together. So I gather if everything was in place there shouldnt be any noise coming from the case?
