ok, took off the valve cover and got the starter motor turning (leads all removed so it wouldnt start) and no change, all appears to be working fine and nothing loose. removed the starter, all looks good, no damage to it or the flywheel... had a mate start it while i was underneath watching the flywheel through the inspection thingy at the bottom of the gearbox... does appear to have a slight wobble. we came to the conclusion its 1 of 2 things: big end bearing with a massive failure, or flywheel is loose. will pull gearbox off next weekend to check properly, but appears i may not have done it right. which would make joe right

i'd definitely be looking at the last thing that got worked on, hopefully it is just a loose flywheel bolt but with it flopping around it could have damaged the bolt holes in the flywheel.

it's either that or the monkeys with hammers inside your motor are hungry & are sending you morse code.

if the flywheel is wobbling, you have found one definite problem. They are such a huge rotating mass, they need to be balanced and true for the engine to work right.

I hope it's loose, and a few minutes with a spanner will sort the thing for you.

Almost sounds like exhaust chatter from a blown alcohol car, even has a whine at the end.........

Pulled the transmission out, clutch all looked good. pulled the clutch apart and got to the flywheel... and what do i see?

finished putting it all back together, but something doesnt sound right... its now got a whine that sounds like it has a supercharger attached to the side...

I just want to chime in and say this thread gave me hope.
Driving to work one morning my sierra was squealing like a pig, I had the shits really bad so I popped it in neutral and revved it to red line... Well after that the noise started, exactly the same as mentioned in this thread. I panicked, thought the worst (it really did sound like something internal and definitely not good) got it towed back home and did some research. Here I thought I would be pulling the engine out for a complete strip and rebuild but upon reading this thread I thought, "this sounds EXACTLY the same as what mine was doing."
Pulled the engine out yesterday and what did I find;
EVERY SINGLE BOLT on the flywheel was loose as f***!
Nipped it up with lock tight and a torque wrench, threw some new engine mounts in for good measure and ITS BACK BABY!
Only a few gaskets and two mounts all up cost me just under $100. Waaaaay cheaper then a new engine!
