SJ70 1990 Sierra, I’m reinstalling the rear wheel axel because I bought a lemon apparently LOL

Just searching for some advice with the job as after having the bearing installed, I’ve been hammering the axel in with a block of wood and a rubber mallet for about 10 minutes and the bearing still seems to be sitting slightly out of its post. Photo attached.

Is this how it’s supposed to seat, or have I managed to install the thing in the wrong orientation and my incessant hammering has ruined some splines? Really the last thing I need to hear is that I need to rip the whole diff out to investigate. Any advice appreciated
