just looking around, you can pick up low km 1.5l swift engines for around $500 i believe they are an m series engine and have almost twice the horsepower of a jimny engine. anyone have any knowledge in this area? they look to be a fairly similar looking engine.

Better off buying a m13a Jim in the 1st place.
But for a conversion get a 98+ coilpack baleno 1.6 block as they are newer than the vit g16b, Also can be engineered, And use your head and ecu. Will need an adaptor plate to gearbox and other minor bits/changes.
Older motors are not allowed in newer vehicles.

I have a Swift Sport. Its gutless below 4000rpm. Not what I would be using in an off roader...

drewmouli. Spoke to Kyzer about this very option today and he did say that using an m18 ECU would mean you lose some extras/different signals that a Jimny requires... such as 4WD, and aircon and temp acordingto Kyzer. Have you thought about how to deal with these?

I've thought about it in more depth then most probably ever will and deffo more then Kyzer if what you are saying is accurate.
My conclusions is don't bother swapping the ECU's unless you are one of the more able members of the forum. Will have to swap loads of pins around whatever possible combination of Engine/ECU you go for - some more then others, and will have to frig the Air Con and 4x4. Depending on combination of Jimny/motor/ECU you'll also have to mess with MAP/MAF/EGR/O22 Sensors, tweak the wiring on the Immobiliser unit and fit the right Throttle body for your combination too. (As well as actually replacing the Immobiliser and internals of your Key with ones matched to the ECU)
In short I've come out with loads of different variables just off the top of my head, and rest assured I have sat down with the wiring manuals and Pin outs for an M13A VVT into M18A VVT and throughly compared them. In lesser detail I have also scrutinized M13 non VVT into M16 non VVT and there is the same niggling problems. ECU almost does it all, but not quite, Some custom wiring cleverness needs to be fiddled to finish the job.
I'm not saying you can't do it and one forum member has a thread with pictures of he doing it to his jimny, but you won't get any help on this forum in detail, it's just one of those things where you have to decide exactly what engine/ECU combination you are putting into your year, model spec of jimny, get the correct manuals and then sit down with them and individually assign each pin from the old ECU to the new ECU. There is about 50 of them. about 90% are easy, the other 10% leave you in doubt and about 5% need to be modded in some way, and that's where you need to be sure within yourself that you know what to do and understand what you are doing. You won't be able to log on to the forum and get the answers to your wiring if your 4x4, air con don't work, or if your Immobiliser won't talk to the ECU etc...
I hope my advice is loud and clear, LEAVE IT ALONE unless you can solve your own problems when they occur. There is a reason most proffessionals would insist that you replace the wiring loom from the donor vehicle, and there is a reason we all leave the stock M13ECU in generally when we do it at home on the cheap.

Yeah, using the original ECU is definitely the easiest route. Main thing I am still investigating with this method is to ensure that the engine will not run lean (or at incorrect fuel pressure) and what to modify to fix these problems. Kyzer has a few suggestions on how to mechanically trick, or bypass the ECU, so when I meet up with him I'll take some notes and chat to my mechanic on how to implement them.

Well good luck with that. The best I got from speaking to tuning shops was a replacement ECU for about $2500 inclusive of fitting and tuning. I thought that was a good price to be honest for the amount of work involved.
Ask him about - EGR, TPS, CPS, both O2 sensors, VVT, MAP, MAF, EVAP - I expect he'll soon tell you to either go full aftermarket ECU or forget about it. By the way, my Air/Fuel Mixture on rolling road is available for you to view in members rides section. M18 with M13 ECU. it's all there if you search a little bit. As documented, it'll run a bit lean or a bit rich and sometimes it runs out of adjustment up long full load hills and just dumps a load of fuel in now and again, but generally the M13 ECU compensates nicely.

Very nice. I'll take a look at that thread. And yeah, I expected an aftermarket ECU to be that sort of money.

What's happened with this? You got a new engine yet? This was Bugsta's last ever post according search results. Sounds like Jimny is dead.

that's going to have some grunt. I wonder if this will be the first Jimny Commo V6. I'd like to see a GV V6 in a Jimny.

I'd like to see a J20 in a jimny with a descent tranny and stronger diffs, it would be awesome I would imagine all of these things require crazy fab work though.......

Everyone in this thread has mention the Swift sport M18 being difficult to get sorted electrically if using the M18 ECU into Jimny BUT...
What about the M18 in Baleno GTX? Has it got the coded key and all that crap?

There is no M18 baleno!
Its a J18. If you go that series, you may as well go J20 or J24

Something about this whole sentence reeks of 'never gonna happen'. That's all I'm going to say in a negative way about this now cause I'm not just on this forum to flame people. On a positive note, would be kinda cool if this conversion worked, although a Suzi Vit V6 would be more in keeping with the brand. What are you doing with the gearbox, clocks, ECU, wiring loom etc? Is this going to be a compo car only or road legal?

well to put everyone at ease, it is happening haha. Specs are, 3.8 combo V6, t700 auto to a lt230 transfercase adaptors have just been finished for the gearbox to transfer today, and it is all bolted together. The loom has also been stripped back to just what we need, it is now a matter of making up some mounts, exaughst system, new drive shafts and a few other bits and pieces. the aim is to have it finished sometime next week.

I reckon it's going to be a tight fit. You won't have much room under the bonnet once the v6 goes in

My hopefull next build: Jimny > j20 > AW4 > Sierra TC > HJ78 Diffs > 35s > Engineered
Not sure on the engine, probably end up 1.6 Baleno Engine, but the rest is the plan for when I get back to AU, will see what the engineers say. Im sure plans will change before then, I guess it will be wait and see.
