hey guys, new suzuki kid here. im currently running a 91 4runner, 2inch lift, 32" bighorns etc etc. original plan was to upgrade to a patrol or landcruiser, but after 10months, nothing decent within my price range has come up. so im thinking of a zook as they are excellent value for money and the majority have low km... anyways, the majority of my driving is just yahooing on the weekend (plenty of mud driving, quarrys, summer trails etc) but we do get away to yorks / robe once every few months. i'd prefer coils all round just so it can get flexy easy, something that is relatively easy to modify, something that has plenty of off the shelf mods too.. as we live in the hills also, something with a little bit of power would be good (the 2.8 desiel is guuuuuutless haha) also, what zooks come with solid axle front?? i been thinking a jimny, or maybe a vitara just cause they comfortable. but if a siera is gunna be heaps tougher in comparison, id rather sacrifice the comfort... thanks so much guys for putting up with all the n00b questiions! much appreciated

If you want a sierra get a leafy simply because they flex better and there are more off the shelf items for them than coilys
As for power well unless you get one with a 1.6 then you wont have alot. Both sierras and jimnys come out with live axle front but the sierra is an easier car to modify and cheap to fix.

If comfort is important to you forget a Sierra, sure the old leafy's flex up great, but my jimny goes everywhere my old sierra went and more, and is more comfortable on road aswell. Theres plenty of tough Jimny's on this site so have a look in the Rigs section and let that decide

but if he doesn't have alot of money a jimny isn't the best answer yes they are comfy and go the same places as a Sierra but they cost more to modify

can comfortably drop upto 10k into a rig, so jimny is still on the cards. atari, your vitari is rad! would be very happy to own a car of that caliber. just so long as it can go every where my 4runner can and can crawl up freeway hills at 90+kmh ill be happy i really just dont wanna purchase a model which has inherit problems, or there is a lack of off the shelf mods for

Well most of the cars suggested have a wide range of off the shelf stuff and if you have 10 k to spend on the car I'd go with a vitara

If you want a good offroad vehicle, go a leafy sierra. If you buy a stocka and drop a bit more cash into gearing and lockers, it'll take you way more places than a Toyota or nissan will get you (I owned 2 gq's previous to my Sierra). As for power, the little 1.3's in the Sierra's are no powerhouse, but if you're driving a diesel forerunner now, you'll think you've stepped up to a ferrari.
Oh, and hardtops are probably a little more comfortable less nosier than a soft top. Something to consider if you're going to drive it every day.

from the sounds of wat u want u want a vitara and a sierra in one but we no that aint gonna happen

but if u can live with a bit/alot of bouncing around go a sierra and to give it a bit more power upgrade the motor ( vitara 1.6 ) and u can always change seats seats for better comfort and one lift not only will removing the load spring give u better flex it will make ur ride a bit/lot softer depending on wat brand lift u use and as mentioned lockers and grearing will see u never looking back

i may be wrong, but cost wise there wouldnt be much difference between building up a sierra or a vitara, lockers, tyres, barwork would all be the same?

vitaras can be had cheap as chips now. this is adelaide, you do need to drive 100's of kms to get to legal fun and when you do get there its only going to involve sand dunes or desert, no where will you realistically need any bigger than a 31" tyre.

Atari's, and my ( well maybe a while ago) vitara have gone many places a pootrol or land barge wouldnt, so dont write them off striaght away

As said previously, make sure you get a GOOD zook, Its worth spending a little extra for a untouched one/modified properly one.

Dont write off a Jimny just yet tho, you can get decent ones for 4-5k now, leaves a fair bit for decent mods

haha, probably all the places you lads are going there are a few good spots close enough to home to get your fix.... the only thing thats kinda been off putting about the vitaras has been the front end suspension set up, and apparent glass diffs. i guess its just one less thing to worry about with the sierra... but at the same time a 1.6 injected does sound good bah, dilemers haha.... and thanks greenzook, words from the wise

It might be hard to say what to suits you best without knowing exactly what terrain you drive (i'd want to see some video), but i reckon you'd probably get anywhere you want to go in a Vitara, and atleast you can get a standard one with 1.6efi, so it'll be comfortable. Depending on the terrain, you may never need to modify anything. I think some people tend to think that they need something really hardcore but in reality a stock standard car will do the job easily.

A Standard Vitara will go the same places a Standard Sierra will go (see all the bitch fight threads about that)

So if you want to go crazy, you spend $5000 on each vehicle for gears, lockers, CVs mods.

Jimny would do the same job too.

well, havent got any photos from recent wheeling. but this was the first weekend i got my 4runner. the longer ive owned the car, the more my confidence has grown to attempt harder lines. and since putting the 32 muddies on, that has opened up even more lines... so i dont really think a stocker will cover what i need from a 4x4 even with the 2inch lift and 32s, bottoming out on some lines is still unavoidable
