on the pasingers side. top of the block towards the fire wall. there is a badge kind of thing on the block what does that say?

You have a 1.6!
Measure the height of the block from the sump mounting face to the head mounting face. 235mm = 1300, 265mm = 1600.

somewhat dodgy way to not bother with a modplate for an engine swap too

Yeah I'd bank it was a dodgey way to get around a mod plate but why would the numbers not match his vin plate? Go to all that trouble then get the stamped number wrong? lol. My g16a has another section on the block that actually says g16a. I think it's also got the exact capacity in cm3.
