WT sierra on 31s:
Front Pumpkin - 255mm (10")
Front Axle Tube - 335mm (13.2")

Rear Pumpkin - 260mm (10.2")
Rear Axle Tube - 340mm (13.4")

based on those measurements a stock WT on 205/70r15 would have:
Front P - 191mm (7.5")
Front A - 271mm (10.7")

Rear P - 196mm (7.7")
Rear A - 276mm (10.9")

that was very bottom of diff pumpkin. going off those measurments Aron- looks like they are the same.

i use to have a big spread sheet on exel with with about 15 different tyre sizes comparing vitara rear to trol diff. was really good to look at, untill my comp got fixed and now my old hard drive is in a box. so i cant really get the info off it anymore :(

well not really 35" tyre means at max 2" more clearance than the 31" tyre and of course a datsun diff is going to be bigger the car is 2.5 ton vs a zook at 1 ton

plus what is the standard size of a patrol tyre 31" so 35's are only 4" bigger than standard

and the sierra had 27" tyres from the showroom? so a 31 would be the same difference would it not.

nope - sierras have 26" from the showroom...

205/70r15 = 205mm *0.7 = 143.5mm /25.4mm = 5.649" *2 = 11.299" + 15" (rim) = 26.299"

light wheight, good angles and a fearless attitude will worry the big stuff, modify your zook and youl beat standard stuff, but come on once there modified too, brute force and strength! versus light and weak?

if i can pick the track ill beat any full size truck, but if they pick it thell make me look like a chump

horses for courses!

Ok so that means that by percentage you have to go bigger than a patrol to get the same pumpkin clearance. if that makes sense.

and we know that zook diffs dont like much more than 34'' tyres while i have seen many larger rigs running much bigger than that.

also patrols run arguably some of the strongest running gear in the game (the newer engines excluded)

im not saying the zooks are lesser than the bigger boys in fact i feel the opposite tough trucks 2010 show us that little suzis are shit hot.

However in reality it is as has been said horses for courses. I for one would certainly not do some of the trips i do in our patrol in a sierra or a vitara as it is just not feasible

the biggest winning point for the suzuki is that to make one far more than capable it is quite cheap where as modifying a bigger vehicle like a patrol or cruiser is much more expensive.

Here is a noobcad version of why I think most people think that a suzuki has more clearance.

It has to do with the wheel position in the ruts. The narrower wheel base will allow th wheels to sit higher in the ruts making the pumpkin sit higher above the centre of the ruts.

Quite logical when you think about it.

and my zook had just under 5 mm more clearance

think a zook on 31's has more than a patrol on 35's. a guy at work has a lux with 35's and me with 30's he has 20mm more clearance, his friend has 35 on patrol and he said it has less than his lux cos the pumpkin is bigger again

Maybe as standard, but everyone puts big offset rims on their Sierras so they end up the same width as a Hilux. My Sierra has had standard WT diffs with big offset and now has Hilux diffs with normal offset and they are the exact same width. Vitaras are the same width as Hiluxs aswell.

But yeah Patrols are wider than that.

It's good to see people taking measurements and putting some facts up.

But then the next question is, is a Suzuki better than the others/Can a Suzuki outdrive others? I think you'd have to have quite a few Suzukis and quite a few other makes and do maybe 100 different tracks as a test?

Sure if you get to choose the track you can say you'll outdrive a Patrol, just measure between some trees and make sure there's not enough room for a Patrol? That'd be about the only thing i'd believe, any other claims would be another internet rumour

Should propose that challenge to 4wdActionMagazine, they'd probably give something like that a go..
And it's not really that a Sierra is better than anything else.. It's the short wheelbase and low weight makes it very user friendly
Not that it's better to drive, just a little more forgiving

rampover angle is something else that comes into play... compare a sierra's rampover to a patrol and you get a MASSIVE difference.

Mitch

You can buy a USB dock from Jaycar to plug either IDE or SATA hard drive into your PC. Costs bugger all.

Pinched from thread on Outers:

OK i measured the hight from the bottom of the diff pumpkin to the ground, this is what i got

Suzuki sierra 235x75r15

23cm front and back with 22psi in tyers

GU patrol with 285x75r16 mtz

24cm front and back with 40psi in tyers

so only 1cm higher

cheers scott.

Cool. 235/75R15 has overall diameter 733mm. 285/75R16 has overall diameter 834mm. So diameter difference is approx 100mm, and radius (ie ground to centre of hub) is 50mm.

The GU is sitting on tyres 50mm taller to the hub, but only has 10mm more clearance - so the GU diff must be 40mm deeper than the Sierra (WT obviously - NT would gain even more). So a GU needs tyres 80mm taller (3.2") than the Sierra to maintain the same clearance

Which means a Sierra on 32" tyres should have slightly better clearance than a GU on 35s.

x2

its so much fun. bouncing over obstacles and weaving around narrow trees, having a choice of lines to take, hitting the rev limiter while climbing dunes.

my mate has a n older patrol and we meaasured the diff clearance,

his was about 22cm with a big lift and 32's (i think) and mine was 21 (with 215's)

so only 1 cm difference and i could probably get that back by sitting higher as shown in tzars drawing

yeah they put a bit of facts but they always leave the answer kinda up to you... Also in a pootrool vs zook they prob would say that toyota is better hahaha

just remember it takes a special type of person to be able to drive a zuk successfully too. i have known people with twinlocked zooks who couldnt manage to make them go any where. they moved onto a patrol and now at least have an excuse for not being able to drive any where..

What's the measurements?

I'm not that clever, so let's all go get Portal Hubs

not really, as the clearance from the ground to the diff or axle is given by the size of the tyre as is the only link between two, the bigger the tyre the more clearance for the diff and the less able to hit a rock or something....

Zook's have smaller diff pumpkins....

yeap yeap we get all that, but these rumours keep recycling on forums and i don't beleive that any of the people have measured anything. It's a fantasy.

Yea I agree, but there is probably some difference... Probably not the 2 or 3 inches most people say though...

my brother has a SWB GQ patrol, '92 model. it has 31's and has exactly the same clearance as my sierra on 215/75's. "fantasy" it isnt, its now a proven fact... sierras have the same diff clearance as a GQ on tyres 2 or 3 inches bigger. so thats, what, 1-1.5 inches more clearance underneath assuming same sized tyres...

pretty sure any bloke will say an inch makes a difference...
