okay so ive emailed low range asking a few questions regarding avalibility of the 3 pin carrier, 1510s and spools
im very indecisive at the moment so gunna wait to see what lowrange says before i make any sort of decision.
But im thinking a spool will cost 100 shipped as opposed to 250 for 1510 or 450 for 3 pin, and ill be more confident that i can properly install a spool than a lockright that that might be the way to go for now.. and if i really hate it then i can rip it out and go for an autolocker just as easily
chris: what you said about the spool making it hard to steer ect, doesnt the lockright do the same as it would be locked when under acceleration? (i assume youre talking about turning out of ruts and mud)

Yes turning out of slippery ruts, is same with spool and auto,
tend to keep skidding forwards.
This is when an air locker be good on front.
But I usually found a way out.
Going down steep dry hills, steering is just very heavy with a spool,
an auto is not as heavy, and can unlock, if you not accelerating too hard.
As you say, spool can be taken out if you hate it too much.

I'm a disability pensioner, so I do understand broke.
But thats what learnt me stuff, had no choice but to spin spanners.
I chose the Spartan front locker from a Sierra into front of my vit.
Stronger design, and a bit cheaper.
Hard part is removal and refitting diff,
locker bit was easy.
There should be a topic thread on here somewhere.
I chose no to a spool, because I have driven with a spooled front,
and I traded to a Vitara, because I need a more comfy car,
and I'm no longer tuff enough to deal with the heavy steering..
The 3 pinion front locker from lowrange was considered, for ease of set up,
but too pricey for me.
As you said spool cheapest and easiest fit.
3 pin a bit too dear.
So I pick fit the best thing that you can afford.
I can't decide for you.
You can get help, if needed too, AZ is cool that way.

PS. If fitting a Sierra type Auto Locker,
You need the diff pins support, (square block thing), from a 1.3 Sierra.
Some say should use Sierra side gears, too, but many have used the Vit ones.

I've used the sierra sidegears where as my mate used vitara sidegears ..... no real difference at all. The square block is a MUST as this is part of what makes the autolocker unlock. w/o this part I believe the autolocker will be locked all the time...ie: won't unlock at all.....

No don't need 4pins. Mine works fine with 2pin
But some people do drill holes for using 4pin.
Spool will be easier.
But if You go auto, in future,
I have a spare block, if none found local.

okay so i just need to get the spool, take out the little gear things in the carrier and put spool in with 2 original pins and put it all back together?
is the spool a solid block, or hollow?
thanks for that offer mate, much appreciated

I never seen a spool close up,
but it would have to be hollow where the axle splines go in.
Pretty sure you are are correct on spool fitting.
It just replaces the little gears, and locks both axles together

PS the front diff pins have a cotter pin holding them in, so don't try to bash pin out, before removing it. Cotter pin will be accessed after the crown wheel bit is removed. Think thats how I remember it was?

Yeah i have 26 spline front cause mines a 98 model
i did ask lowrange and he said will fit with modification.. Hopefully that just means the thing about using 4 pins. Ill give it a go and if it just wont fit ill either sell it or chuck it in the back lol

Have fun, good luck.
Think I read somewhere about a bit of filing/grinding on the spool
