A spool is 100% locked at all times.
An auto locker will let one wheel turn faster than the other, but not slower, so under power, they are the same as the spool. Under coast, they feel fine. It's the transition between power and coast with the auto locker that's the problem- that's when the car gets "squirelly" because it's getting pushed around by the locker.

Neither is road legal.

Spools feel funny all the time. Auto lockers feel funny some of the time, and the locker picks the time, not the driver. In my opinion, that makes spools easier to live with.

No they aren't legal.
Simply put, they are an adapter that joins the two axles within the centre.

Yeah you get some weird things going on. It's annoying. I put up with the gay drivability to get the offroad ability. Once I can afford an air locker I will get one.

If you can weld good and don't care that it's sort of permanent to that diff, welded. Otherwise spool. I wouldn't buy an auto again.

dont have the money for arb diff lock but i have been told just to weld rear diff.
is this a reliable option and if so how do i do it.

a spooled diff behaves the same as a welded centre, but is 104.35% completely reversible if you keep the parts you replaced with the spool, unlike with the welded diff.

pretty cheap & in my opinion on par with the auto locker with out the noise.

nah, my welded front gave me no greif over a couple of years and was marginally harder to turn than my autolocker. no broken cv's either compared with 5 with auto in same timeframe.

Obviously we all drive in different terrain so our experience is different, but I could never recommend a welded/minispooled front. They just play havoc with maneuverability too much. The guys that ran them here got sick of getting in and out gazillionty times a day to lock/unlock hubs or 57564756 point turns.

Another scenario is the day out with lots of short stretches of fast dirt linking the tracks together - once again, it's lock and unlock at each junction.

Gets old fast.
