Vvt much be alot better cos mine won't pull up a big hill even if I sit in the peak torque range. If the hill is very long then yes it just pulls through in 4th and fit. I'm happy with my highway driving. There's no let down there.

I most Iused to get is max 400 to a tank unmodified and that's on the freeway. With my 215's front bar and a roof box I was getting like 300 around town. With the M18A engine on the freeway, 215's all my weighty mods and a roof box - slip streaming about 7-10 m off the back of a Large truck all the way from Sydney to Newcastle, I can't remember the mileage but I know it was 10.6l/100ks. . But anyway, My M18 tows trailers ok, but it still struggles - fuel economy goes down by about 30% i kid you not. Probably about 220km range until the yellow light comes on. Need a turbo if you want more torque then the M18 Id guess. The M16/M15/M18 all look exactly the same and they are all exactly the same size. - literally IDENTICAL. It's the same block I think cast off the same producation line perhaps? just the insides are different, like the bore and stroke and ports, valves etc I think. Down near the bell housing of the gearbox on the passenger side it has M16, M13 etc stamped into the block and the engine number begins with 'M16XXXX' so for someone who doesn't know suzukis, only if someone saw the old engine number would they put two and two together to figure out that maybe the number refers to the cc. By the way, I reckon you should keep it legal and good on you for not considering the engine swap. Just struggle on untill you can get it done once you passed your p's.

If I understand this thread you are saying that you can't drive a modified vehicle? - I can't fathom a law like this if the modifications have been engineered and legally declared and tested? Or are we talking about cars that have been illegally modified - ie. mods not declared or engineered? Just interested, thats all, got a few mates on p's

I think qld is no engine modification. No v8. No turbo unless turbo diesel out of factory. No rotary. No car over 200kw

I am just wondering with all this discussion about extra torque why no-one has looked into a diesel conversion for a Jimny. They are sold in the left hand drive configuration in Europe with a diesel. Perhaps that one has the exhaust on the RHS so won't work for some reason in the right hand drive car. What about a Vitara diesel. I have never seen any discussion on this forum about that ever. Has anyone looked into it or is it just too difficult to convert from petrol to diesel.

I'd love a 1.5 td Jimny. I reckon a golf td would be a good choice. I think you should do the swap and start a new fad

What happenedd to the Monkey Avatar? Has that fad passed.
I would rather someone else pionered the TD conversion. I have only just done 15,000 km with mine so it's going to be a while before i need to consider an engine swap. Just thought I would plant the seed for someone else to grow.

You can do an engine swap on P plates as long as its mod plated and still under a V8 200something kw and not a petrol turbo, you can do what ever engine mods you want to it as long as its legal.
I was a P player with a heavily modified car, body, engine, drive train, wheels suspension. was all legal.

A 2" exhaust and extractors definitely gave me a small improvement in power, and it sounds way better . It cost me $600 to get it done reusing the original cat. Is the sierra transfer conversion out of reach?, (i assume the standard sierra transfercase gears are actually lower than the jimny ones).

Can regrove is what I'm thinking of. I do have a 1 liter case here with switch. Will that work. Even if it get gearing back to stock, it's still going to lack or torque down low. Nope 100kph is 4250rpm on my Jim with 235s. A stock one will suit it better... Mine is 100kph at 4100rpm with 215s A stock what? Wt case? JrZook wrote: That economy doesn't 'suck'. Personally what were you expecting? That's equal to 9.3km/L. Do you have larger tires? If you are running say 235/75, odometer will be out by ~10% so the actually economy climbs to 10.3km/L.
Why do you need the torque at 2k? The way this engine is built it produces its torque upward of 4k, keep the rpms up there and you will find the economy will also be better even towing. Small capacity, near square engine will always produce max torque at higher RPMs. Even the 1.6 isn't really happy below 3.5K.
Have you got extractors and a descent exhaust? I'm only running 215s tires so not much of a increase. I keep reading Jimny are ment to get around the 450-500km mark. But maybe that's the vvt model Jimny. I also have a fair mount of wait on my car over a standard one. Jimny torque is from 3500rpm and top out at 4500rpm I really need lower torque because I live in the country. There hills every road I go around here, and the poor Jimny is dying up hills. Not that no 5th gear crap, I mean going down to second or some times third gear. It's geting on my nerves. Don't expect much out of the engine but suprisingly a g13ba has better torque then my m13a engine.Nah still have stock extractors and exhaust. Would that be the problem. The 1.3 carby?? really?? was that motor tuned and modified??

Wow that's really ignorant. So you can't drive your M18 Jimny or G16 Sierra but you can drive momma's 4.0 Falcon that has about three times as much power.

I have a 1.3 (no vvt) and an auto transmission. I have 215/75 tyres and 100kph GPS speed is about 3500rpm. I dont know if the diffs are a different ratio in the auto. My economy isnt great, about 11l per hundred on a good day going by the odometer but in reality it's probably 8% or so better accounting for the tyres. I towed the trailer full of gear to rover park a few months ago and used under 15l from grafton to casino which is 100km of undulating slopes. Then towed up the hills toward tenterfield and it was very bearable, i was actually following other cars and keeping up.
Dont be afraid to rev your jimny. Small engines dont wear out at 4000rpm.
All this said, I must admit to wanting more torque at low revs but I agree with the others who say, "not from this engine, sorry".
What they need is a hybrid drive and wait a few years and I bet you can get them.

I'm not affraid to rev the engine. I rev the shit out of it, but as soon as I drive around at 4000rpm fuel economy starts to go shit. Sticking around 3500rpm and I get good milage (roughly 350km to a tank) 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th are all gutless unless I'm up around the 5000rpm range.
