Like Royce my temperature gauge didn't move when the engine overheated .So an after market temp gauge will go in when it's up and running again . Since this has happened , apart from checking and replacing the thermostats in all my cars I went out and got a TM4 Engine Watch Dog for the Land Cruiser . It s great with a digital read out with a audial and visual alarm when it reaches a temperature that you can select . Has anyone got a Engine Watch Dog like Royce is talking about . If so and you've got a G16b , what it's normal running temperature and how much does it fluctuate . Also were have you located the sender.

Hi mate my sierra with the g16b runs 85 degrees normally with a standard sierra radiator and fan on the water pump. During the past couple of days sitting still in traffic with the 40 deg + heat she has reached 90-95 but drops back to 85 once I'm moving again.

Thanks for the reply . I haven't a chance yet to get normal figures yet as the car has only just got back on the road . but running seems to be 69 -74 but when sitting still can creep up to 80deg. After I switch the motor off it will climb higher because of no airflow.

Where are you measuring that? If it's at the thermostat, that seems FAR too cold to me - cold enough the car might not be coming off of cold start. G16B's are designed to run hotter than carby G motors - it improves efficiency.

I've got it connected to the to the top bolt of the engine lift bracket were the inlet manifold connects to the head. I'll monitor it for a while longer to a better average . When I get an after market temp gauge , what temperature would you expect the coolant to be at . Its got a thermostat with a range of 82 -95deg .

On my g16b vit, ive mounted it at the further most intake manifold top bolt. (Same as royce) mine will vary from 70 to 98. If im cruising at 100 it will be 70's. If im out 4wding it will stay between 80-90deg. I have the alarm set for 98. Once the alarm rings i let it idle for 1min and it drops to 80 pretty quick.

So it appears these smaller petrol engines run hotter with greater varying temps than my turbo diesel Land Cruiser. That's good to know as I wasn't sure if I still had a problem with the engine temps flucturating the way it was. Might even have to raise the alarm higher than 86deg.

When im driving to work or just around i set the alarm at mid 80's but when im offroad i increase to 90's.
Where did you mount yours? Is it actually on the head or intake manifold?

when i had my cluster out fitting speed sensor to the speedo i found the temp gauge needle tight. there was a little pin jamming the needle doing exactly same, go to normal temp n no higher. straightened pin so the needle felt free like the fuel gauge, now all good.
