Based on your profile pic , I assume this is your engine from trademe

Image

I see what you mean about the Dissy . Its is mounted underneath the Camshaft . Therefore explains it having the reverse cut gears
I have a SC100 Coupe F10A that has the dissy pointing out the intake side , but it is mounted above the Camshaft and uses the same drive gear as the LJ80/81 F8A and SJ410 F10A

Image

The Drive gear on the end of the Camshaft is pressed in place . You could swap it for the F8a one from the doner engine .Then run the F8a Housing and Dissy .
Have you had the housings off both engines to compare the Camshafts?

hi Chris . yeah I have had both housings off and the camshafts look to be the same diameter(i will have another look and confirm it) ,and my donor f8a runs the distributor from the bottom of the driver gear like my Chinese f8a in the pic .the only difference I can see between both engines heads is that the original f8a has a bolt on piece at the front of the head that the camshaft passes through ,like the head on the SC100's engine in the pic you have posted. where as the Chinese f8a has not got that part! it's one piece . I assume it is a bearing housing ? I'm no mechanic and the most engine work I have ever done was the top end on my son's kx85 a few times ,piston , rings , gudgeon bearing and I once replaced a camshaft and cam gear on my old HQ Belmont's 202 engine lol.
can you tell me do I have to remove the camshaft to exchange the cam gear? I guess I do! I have a good mate who is a mechanic who could do it for me for a couple of 24packs , I hope! :)
yeah I was totally over it the other day when I listed my wheel nut on tradme ,but now I can see it's not so bad and as soon as the auction closes I wont be relisting it. I though it was going to be a big headache ,but a couple of beers and a bit of research and I see its not so bad. cheers for you reply Chris and the info i appreciated it regards Scotty

It might be doable in place , but I would take the Camshaft out to do the gear change . You should be able to get it out without taking the head off or touching the valve springs .

Your new engine has the later model F10A head on it (vertical lines) , where as the SC100 F10A and your doner F8A have the earlier model F8A head . Hence the difference in the front camshaft housing
As far as i know there are no differences between camshafts on the F8A and F10A engines . So theoretically you could swap the F8a camshaft in , if it was in good condition .
303zuke might be able to confirm this .

Love these little engines , will happily sit at 6000rpm all day

yeah I had a 1982 sj 410 softtop with a f10a engine back in 1988 .my cousin who is a mechanic rebuilt the engine for me, tricked it up a bit ,noting over the top just match ported it and tricked the cam up, that engine is now powering a carrot washing machine !! . I gave the sj a repaint and it looked sweet and it also reeved its guts out. it was the best 4x4 I have ever owned. I have had a niva and two bighorns since , but when the lj81 came up I jumped at it .I paid a $1500 for it ,it ran for 3 weeks and then the head gasket blew .so I decided to do her up. but it has just sat there since February , it has a real straight body (cab), and I will re paint it , and get it looking like new ,I hope lol. I thought I was going to be able to just bolt the Chinese f8a in and turn the key. bloody Chinese lol they told me it was the same as the original Suzuki f8a , but they are not so I have found out.

The seal surface area is in a different spot so F8a cams (or more correctly, 2 piece head cams) will puke oil in an F10a/1 piece head. F10a cams might work in an F8a though, not that it would help. :)
