no runs fine until 2000 rpm then loses power then comes back good after 3000 but then still surges at any higher rpm, its only under load,

might have to put it on a dyno and check air fuel ratios

its not dropping a cylinder, so its so hard to work out what it could be, it runs on 4 all the time.

Have you had your spark plugs out? take them out & line them up in order, have a look to see if 1 or 2 are different colors, more than likely 1 will be, that will be the cylinder thats dropping out under load, you may only need 1 coil..

I'd put money on the coil packs being at fault given your description of the problem. Mine had a few hesistant misses, not so much surges, but as if it were missing occasionally. Much less noticable once the engine had warmed up. Mine flashed up the O2 sensor as well, but as it happened (by pure luck) I changed 2 of my coil packs (I had already done the other 2 12 months earlier) as my mechanic said they looked a little perished. As it turned out, they were were my problem. No fault code since.

Girlfriend and I went for a wheel (with some deep puddles) on Saturday up to Point Plumber and on the way home my J20A zuk started to run on only 3 cyclinders. On Sunday I was able to work out it was cylinder number four and I swapped the coil pack and the problem went with the coil pack so that isolates the issue. I gave that coil pack a clean and took off what looked like electrical tape (is that all that is is?) on the probe to find allot of muck underneath so cleaned that and put new electircal tape on and problem fixed - so I thought :(

I drove into work, no problems, then headed up to ARB (today is the big day - getting steel front diff and lockers put in today :D ) she started to run on three again :(

This afternoon I am going to check it out again, maybe a clean needs to be done on the other coil packs.

How much did you pay for them each Stuey? There is something similar (for a Baleno or V6 zuk and they are a little over $180 each - does that sound right? Has anyone tried spitfire coils cause they usually go from $500 a set of four (although I doubt they have anything for Suzuki's).

are these the probes

Do these probs just pull straight down? If so I haven't cleaned this part (between the prob and the coil) so I thought I would give that a try. Also my girlfriend has a J18 powered Balaneo so I may be able to swap the probes around if they pull straight out because it looks as though the connection on the coil packs are slightly different.

Mike, it sounds like some one has taped up the probe to stop it spark jumping. The probes pull straight down off the coil part, from memory there will be a little spring that makes the contact between the 2 parts. $180 sounds about right for the complete genuine coil & probe. The probes would be the same if not very similar to the Balaneo, pull one off & compare them. I know there are 2 different types of plugs & Suzuki wanted my VIN number to get the right ones.

X2 , most of the "probes" can be swapped even tho Suzuki told me thay can't, all go on to the coil the same, Just have to watch for length.

As for two different coil's! Some eng run wasted spark, Balino, some swift, some Vit's ( firing 2 cyl at same time) So a lead will be used in conjunction with the coil & these can not be used.
Single fire coil's come in two type's, 3 & 2 wire, after market coil's look Identical to the gen's but the plug is a wee bit different, Still fit but you have to PUSH the bugger's on & then thay don't want to come off again, & for this reason I will not fit to customer's car's.
I ran after market in my Gv & had no prob's, as long as I didn't want to take the plug off.
