Fair enough evey one has seen different things. All the sludged up engines i have come across have been due to the lack of oil changes or the biggest killer I have founf is people that use a different oil on every oil change. The different detergents from the different oils just don't mix

hey guys.

just read through the whole thread as my engine (1.6l petrol dihatsu sportrak) seems to have a realy bad case of sludge and some of it is baked on. this is a new engine ive recently put in due to the last one crapping out.

just wondering if you managed to get rid of your sludge and how you did it? looks like im going to have to strip my engine but wanted to know if you found another good way?

If it's that bad do as Stuey has done & clean what can be easily removed,
then flush flush flush!!!!

run some diesel oil in it for a couple of thousand, Diesel oil has much higher dertergent property's that petrol oils.

Try like a RX super or LD extra

Sorry, Bit of a thread mine here but ill add my $0.02.

If its badly sludged do a flush as others have mentioned, be it diesel, ATF, a combo, nulon etc. All will work to varying degrees. Get yourself a 20ltr drum of Mobil Delvac MX 15W40 and do frequesnt oil changes. Its mineral based, but a damned good oil full of detergents.

I run it in an 05 WRX as recommended by a very prominent engine builder, and havent looked back. I change oil every 5000K's, or sooner depending on how hard its been driven/any track days etc. For the quality of the oil, and the price, its hard to beat.

Repco etc also stock it ( or used to) and its approx $35/5L. 20 litre drums look at an oil supply shop. Lubesdirect in penrith stock it if your around sydney, not sure what shipping would be worth but any large oil dealer will have it.

Had this sludging on a few cars before. Tryed hand cleanign and diesel etc but the problem is these then to clean off teh sludge in chunks! Not very nice! I came across a product from CEM (cost effective matainence) its an oil flush additive. Only mix 50ml of it to a new batch of oil in your engine and run it at fast idle for ~30mins. Stuff works bloody awesome!! Flush the oil you just put in with the additive and it comes out black as teh ace of spades! This stuff actually melts the 'sludge' to be contained and washed out with the oil! Will need to do a few flushes for a very sludged engine still. Was very impressed with the product!

Oh and ill vouch for those claims on that website. Used the flush in dad's TD patrol. After 2500k's the oil is still see thru!!! Not jet black! Never seen used diesel oil taht clean before.
