I have seen those thing cause a racket too. I think there is a dust shield like chirstover points to on the transfer case, and one on the intermediate shaft too.

Those dust shields are on the transfer flanges themselves though, if he's changed transfers (and the flanges with it) he wouldn't be having the problem.

I just wanted to know which parts he'd kept common while swapping the others, might help us some more.

The diffs do have them, just checked my front (didn't check the back)

They are definitely attached to the flange on the diff rather than the shaft though, I've had the shaft out recently and the dust cover was still on the diff and transfer!

Wow, just checked this thread. I had the same problem too (horrible noises in 4wd ~40kph and during deceleration). Sounds strange but when I changed the diff oil it stopped.

I've done nothing otherwise and ain't got the problem anymore.

Ok so not being silly, that is wierd but if that's all that changed then maybe try it?

Maybe Bruce's diff oil level is low and that's the problem? But yeah - was dreading replacing the front diff, changed the oil and just hoped it'd hold on til I made it to Perth, but it seemed to sort itself out.

Bruces mechanic swapped another diff head into it so no doubt he would have refilled it with fresh oil to the correct level

When can I have a drive? This has got me really intrigued! Have you had a chance to stick it on axle stands? Or is it now a post TT problem?

You can drive it anytime mate. Have not put it on stands yet. 2 weeks after TT I am off to Fraser in it for 4 days. Getting a little over it really. But would really like to try to nut it out.
I drove it today up freeway and around town to do some stuff and it goes well, no noise when just normal driving.

Yes it got there no worries at all. Nothing beats a zook on Fraser. Noise still there.
