Is it still doing it while the drum is on and not doing it when drum is off?

Oh, and as for shoes, I bought some Bendix shoes from an eBay seller on the Gold Coast.

Half the price of any retailer

Might I suggest painting some obvious colour (not soray of course) on all the metal components like orange paint and placing the drum back on. Give it a couple of rotations and see what comes off on the drum. If you only have or can only get a spray can, spray a bit into the cap to form a pool then brush it on.
