hey guys.
noticed today that the suspension on my passenger side was much higher than the drivers side. apon closer inspection the rear spring is not sitting in the right spot, the spring is now sitting around further than the notch it should sit in. Having never done anything with suspension before, i jacked the car up to see if it could be rotated, but its held in at the top of the spring tower thing. can anyone offer some ideas? i had this new springs installed the other week at the local k-mart, which wasnt the best idea, but they assured me it was fine. i just dont think that they will fix it, they will probs use the excuse that it is aftermarket and so they dont gaurentee it. so i want to have a go at fixing myself. some guidance would be apreciated :)

you should be able to unbolt the lower shock mount, then jack the car up from under the diff on the right hand side, place a axle stand/chassis stand under the chassis infront of the right hand rear wheel then lower the jack until the pressure is taken off the spring and is able to be reseated.

FYI I'm not 100% sure on the suspension set up on the jimny's, can someone confirm that the springs aren't captive on the jimny's?

there is nothing holding the springs in place. as atari said just take off the bottom of the shockie and jack it up so you can get the weight off the spring then you should be abale to turn it.

often there should be a different left and right spring for the front or the rear. say that jimnys will get a lean over time. spring spacers are your friend both front and rear springs locate in the axle only one way and has a rubber foot at the top of the spring maybe a spring is even upsidedown?? the lesson here might be Kmart is for buying sheets, pots and pans or cheap dog food......

around the brisbane, sunshine coast, gold coast etc?

thans mate. the suspension is like 3 weeks old, so im sure its no lean just yet. but yeah, wont be heading back to kmart again. my reasoning at the time was that, well they couldnt doa worse job than me, and it will save me the time... didnt figure id have to fix it myself, or that theyd do a crap job... oh well.
as for the AC, didnt get to looking at it, was a little pre occupied with the suspension. should get some time tomorrow to have a look at everything and work out where i stand.

hey guys, further issues with the suspension, it seems that the passenger side of the car is like 5cm taller than the right, and it almost looks like the tyres arent even in relation to the body ie. passenger side sticks out more than driver. what could have caused this, what is the problem, can i fix it? or is the suspension just crap? i only had it for like a month, so i think its under warranty, but i dont have the orig. suspension to take it off... bloody car places never listen

5cm taller is a lot. Often spring kits have taller springs on the drivers side to compensate for the weight of the driver (most of the time there is only one person in a car, the driver). Sounds like they may have the springs on the wrong side. Even then 5cm is a lot, have you measured with a tape measure?

As for the off centre axle, with an 80mm lift you should install adjustable Panhard Rods front and rear. If you have them already they just need to be adjusted properly and the passenger side being so much higher will also have an adverse effect on the axle positioning.

ok, so turns out that low and behold, the incompetent mechanic managed to get the springs round the wrong way... so its off inthe morning for them to fix it (at their expense... im not that dumb)
and i wont be heading back there

as for the off centre axle issue nutter, i am aware of the 80mm kits requiring it, but mine is only 45mm, so would have thought it would be okay... dont have adjustable panhards. so im thinking that once they put it round the right way, all will be sweet. wonder how i didnt notice the error before...

For some reason I thought that you had an 80mm lift :oops:

Seems a bit weird that a 45mm lift can make one side 50mm higher than the other. You're right about not needing panhards with a 45mm lift though. Fingers crossed for you that all goes well today.

yep nutter. all sorted... it now sits normally. and the axles are fine. what can i say, crappy mechanics

and when i go to the big lift, im going to go bigger than 80mm. there is a 4.5 inch liift from this place in engalnd called the offroad armory, or is it outdoor armory. it includes new control arms and all. check it out if you get a sec. they also have lots of jimny bits. prices arent too bad, but the shipping would be the killer. Lucky i go to england almost everyt year for work ;)
heavy suitcase though :D

i seen that lift kit as well, looks good but as you said shipping would be a killer.
