Gday all,

Has anyone serviced the rear bearings on a jimny? im having a clicking type noise coming from the rear that can only bear heard above 90km/h so i pulled the wheels off tonight and it sounds like a rubbing noise on the drivers side rear when spinning it? any ideas?

the bearing setup is similar to Sierra and Vitara, If the wheel bearing was noisy at 90km/h I'd expect it to be whinning not clicking and normally after a few weeks of whinning it leaks oil.

yeh the noise has been there for a few weeks now, perhaps the bearing is on its way out instead? and no i have no leaks.

jimny wheel bearings are not a servicable item, like most things these days, its a throw away item.

They are the same as a WT setup, PM if you need some. i have a set on the shelf.

i dont mind doing the job i just need to know how hard and what tools im gunna need to get the bearing off and then back on again?
Any ideas?

Its not a hard job but does take effort. you'll need a hammer and chissel, a press would be helpful you could use a grinder if you careful.

once the axle is out of the car, you've disconected the brakeline you'll see the bearing next to the backing plate, feel if the bearing is rough, if so there is your problem, if its smooth put it back in!

on the inner side of the bearing is the locking colar and this will need to be removed, using a cold chissel or a grinder but be very careful not to damage the axle with the grinder, its much easier to discribe how to remove the collar by using a picture which I don't have.
If you firstly shatter the outer bearing race with a hammer (beware metal will fly everywhere (glasses needed)) and remove the ballbearings you can than slide the backing plate off the axle and you'll have more room to work.
once bearing and collar has been removed, put the backing plate back on the axle and install the new bearing and locking collar with a work press. DONT FORGET THE BACKINGPLATE!!!! some bearings will have a spacer built into the inner race, and some will have a seperate spacer, this goes on the hubside of the bearing replace the seal and put it all back together.

If your a suzuki rear wheel bearing replacer virgin, than this is gonna be a challenge but if your keen to drive through heaps of mud, I would sudjest you stick with it and learn cause mud kills bearings and rear brakes very quickly ( 2 or 3 per year)
