Post subject:  noisy auto locker ?
just put in a second hand auto locker, didnt have a look inside just whacked it in but geezus is it noisy. Maybe im just getting old but it clicks, bangs and engages/disengages heaps. I have had them before but cant remember what they were like, is this normal. Think i prefered the welded rear. Can this be caused by to much backlash ? i set it just a tad more than standard. Also i think it sat around for a while out the car ?

If it is I know it would let out a fair bang when sharp cornering slowly as in pulling into my driveway, but this was only ever occassionaly. The diff was professionally setup by The Diff Centre in Oconner a couple years ago and I use to use 85/140 in it. As you know though I never daily drove mine, also I wonder if the light rear end in yours makes a difference.

i had an auto locker in the rear of my 84 NT ton top and mine was real noisy, especially when backing out of a tight shopping center car park. it actually made the bak of the car jump around a bit. to the point that people wuld stare cus they thought the car was stuffed. mine was installed by 4WD systems Adelaide.. they just told me it was normal cus they were really meant for bigger/heavier cars with more sound proofing so u couldn't hear it 2 much.

Ive got one in the front and when turning tight Ive had people yell at me to stop and that Ive got a broken CV. You get use to it I dont really notice it that much any more

yeah its your old one but in my 4.1 housing, i think i may be being over critical. Iam running 80w90 in it might swap to the one you were using and see if that makes a difference. Does good doughnuts tho :lol:

Installed one in a mates Suzuki about a month ago with slightly too much backlash and it was noisy as all hell.

Dropped it down to minimal possible backlash and it’s become a lot quieter and doesn’t unlock as often for no reason.

i hate mine, unlocks for no reason, honesty i would go an airlocker but if you cant afford it weld the diff.

locking and unlocking when doing 100kmh sends you into the next lane!

At least it doesn't make my car change lanes whenever it feels like it...

Not exactly sure what you are refering to as trolling :roll:

Anyway to answer your question, no I have never had an airlocker however I have had 2 Lockrights and 1 Detroit and I would gladly get either again. In a straight line there was no difference between stock with either of mine, let alone forcing me to ' change lane whenever it felt like it '. As I said the only time mine made its presance known was when slowly turning into a driveway or parking spot.

I have however been on trips with several people that have had their airlockers stay engaged, not disengage and so forth. Their are horror stories on both sides of the fence but for over a grands worth I would expect the airlockers to be alot more reliable then what they appear to be, maybe I am expecting too much of ARB :wink:

they generally are (read reply below). of the squillians of airlockers i've done, i only had two owner ubused units come back for a quick repair. of all the lockrights i've done they have gone out within specified tolerances, only to end up noisy as hell 6 months or so later.....guess what?.....they need a re-shim. bet they don't tell you that when you buy one!

Yep its noisy as shit and bangs in and out under acceleration to 60 at least 5 times. I will try minimal backlash and maybe a re-shim.
It will eventually find its way into the front of mine with some chromos and i will go a spool/detroit in the rear.

mine "clicks" and also rarely clunks (engages, only when you are accelerating) around corners at low speed. Generally I don't find it a problem.

Out of interest what brand is your auto locker? Mine is a lockrite.

I installed an auto in the rear of mine. The only time i notice it is if i dont keep constant power while cornering, or if i drop the clutch to quick while turning.

Sure an air locker would be nice, for on road driving but I doubt it will be that nice to warrant the cost.

I am considering putting one in the front now too.

haha it worried me so i stopped watching :lol: not bad though as i drove into his
workshop in the morning and drove out in the arvo with 2 diff locks installed and my transfer rebuilt with 6.5s. :wink:

well this is why i took the rear lokcer out of my zook as it was making to much noisy clicking and banging on the road in a straight line i was getting to much attention with the noise fromt the locker..

mine is also a lockrite locker.

my brother used to work for a diff company and he said that it needed to be reshimmed and that aswell but i have never got around to getting it done .

i really dont want to get greasy again, in the last week ive had the motor and box out once, radiator 3 times, diff twice, axles 3 times (bearings) not to mention clutch, rear main, thermostat, thermo fans ect... I hate it but cant stand it so its coming out.......now
