Possibly a stupid question. If you were to weld the front diff, it wouldnt affect on-road driving whilst the hubs are unlocked yeah? Is there much difference in having only the front diff locked as opposed to only the rear? Would a mechanic check the vehicle in 4wd and notice that it was welded when doing a pink slip inspection? cheers |

It won't affect on road handling 'unless' the hubs are locked. The pinkslip should pass, as they wont test 4wd. 4wd is only meant to be engaged in slippery conditions or offroad. There are pro's and cons of a locked front. (my opinion) Pro's: Full 4wd engagement, no matter how much air you get. The opposite wheel will still drive. So you will possibly get further. Con's: Heavier steering Greater risk of cv/axle breakages Greater risk of (2pin) carrier breakage Slippery side slopes you will notice that it will drive where it wants too.(down hill). I have a locked rear only, open front. I have been surprised how far i get with my different setup to most. |

I drove for years with both ends welded. You learn to drive it differently. kept hubs unlocked until needed, to rest arms. Power steering made it no problem at all. Fitting a proper locker to front was much better tho. I did one adventure tour with only rear locked, and another member had only front welded, in my opinion he got further easier than me. New vitara has auto locker in rear, much kinder to tyres, nicer for u turns, but welded was always fine in a light sierra. |
