Well we were just out wheelin the other night and when i get out to lock my hub in i found that my driver side hub was frozen solid . luckily i was only with a cruiser and a maverick so i could do everything they did in 2 wheel drive anyway .

This afternoon i went to investigate what had happened. I found that the hub had absolutely no grease in it, the spring had snapped and the switched was also siezed. I had a couple of spare ones so i put one of them on and now it locks but the hub will not unlock. I am pretty sure i am missing a step or something when putting it back together.

Long story short, what the hell is the small spring attached to the large gear do? does anyone have an exploded assembly of a suzuki manual locking hub? and is there a trick to setting them up properly or something?

yeah alex that was an option but i figured i should just leave it alone. we couldnt figure it out from the one i pulled off and two spares...

First off, you only need a small amount of grease for any contacting parts. Don't pack the free-wheeling hub full of grease.
Next. When assembling the spring and sliding gear, it winds down to the bottom of the slide. When you put it together, make sure the hub is in the UNLOCKED postion.
It's a bit hard to explain in words but once you have it figured out it is pretty easy. If you're not sure, take it apart and take some photos of it.

As far as i know, the spring pushed the gear inwards to lock the hub, and when you switch the hub to unlocked, the spring pulls the gear out and unlocks the hub.

When i first pulled one apart it took me ages to figure out how the spring attached to the gear, but if you look at one that's still together you will figure it out. The end of the spring locks inside the gear. So maybe if yours doesn't unlock it may be because the spring isn't attached to the gear?

Check this thread, it has some links in it to info on rebuilding hubs.

When you do it don't pack the whole hub with grease, just lubricate things that slide against each other.

well i never actually got the damn thing to work and i'm sick of playing with the internals so im going to replace it till i get one that actually works. do all sierra hubs fit? like are 1L - 1.3L N.T - 1.3L W.T all interchangeable?

when i put the manuls on the jimny i cleaned and repacked them took me a couple of goes to figure out how they worked and to get them to work properly when it was back together. as said about the have to be unlocked when they go back together, also they should just slide together with out much effort. if you have to force them try again casue its not right. thats what i found anyway.
