I've used fish oil since as long as I can remember as a rust barrier on my cars - but now I find myself doing a lot more beach runs, i'm sick of sand sticking to the oil, and want a better solution. It's not stopping rust at all... but maybe that's just coz I'm using the Supacheap $3 cans of fish oil.


Firstly - how do I get the fish oil off - seems real sappy, and no amount of degreaser or car wash gets it off

Also, what's the best underside protector for our little zooks if we're doing regular beach runs? Was looking at just layering some sound deadener on, but not sure what prep would be required.

Good quality paint and big mud flaps will prevent 95% of underbody rust...
Unfortunately nearly all rust preventatives will be sticky.
Fish oil can be removed by steam cleaning.

Don't know about getting fish oil off?? The best would be electronic I suppose, and a real good wash when you get home. A friend of mine taught me a bushy trick to neutralise the salt, Bicarb soda mixed with water, you will get a white kind of furr build up(salt i guess) and high pressure clean off.

The best form of prevention is maintenence, don't be lazy after you go up the beach, problem solved. Its a pain in the arse but has to be done unfortunately :cry:

I've only owned my Sierra for 2 months, but I'm fastidious to say the least when it comes to cars - not one to let problems get out of check.... thus why I sprayed fish oil on the underside before even setting a wheel on the sand... but unwittingly I've come to realise sand sticks to the fish oil, the fish oil is like a crazy sap, or tar. Once the sand's stuck on the fish oil, there ain't no getting it off. And where's there's sand - rust is only a heartbeat away.

Like I said- no amount of scrubbing gets it off. I could point a high pressure hose at one spot for an hour and it'll do jack squat.

Properly sealing the underside is the best prevention, and that's what I want to do. Just wonderig if others can recommend any product

After my Sierra suffering badly with rust I wanted to make sure I protected
my new pride and joy. when I bought my Jimny 9 years ago electronic rust prevention was still a bit of an unknown. After asking lots of questions I decided to try one. We do a lot of beach driving and after nine years I'm happy to say these systems do work and the ERPS branded one I have has definitely worked well.

my ERPS also works

shell ENSIS fluid works well and doesnt stay forever so its not gummy

but youll never beat a real good hose and dry out

mixture of black jack ( stuff you paint onto a leaky old roof ) its also called bituminised tar.... mixed with equal part tectal rust proofing and maybe some unleaded or mineeral turps to thin it down.... surface prep is a solid wire brushing with paticular attention paid to folds or joins in the metal and of course clean any existing rust up with rust conterter... can be sprayed on or brushed on depending or the consistency.... never had a car get a spot of rust yet.... and its black so makes the underside of the car lok the goods too

Likewise I have been beaching it up for yonks.

Anyway to get your Fish oil off you will need to spray Mineral turps liberally all over the oil, let it soak in then pressure wash it off befores it tacks up again if you know what I mean. You will need to repeat a few times.

I use Lanoline in the doors and body panels, works well and smells better than fish oil. Repeat this every 2 years.

Next use blackjack tar or body deadner underneath, be liberal with it, get into all the crooks and crannies.
DO NOT PUT ANY INSIDE THE CHASSIS!

Then before your next beach run, Spray a light engine oil with diesel or dexron transmission oil everywhere except on rubber hoses and brakes etc. Get plenty into the chasis as well.

When you get back home from the beach use your pressure washer to remove the oil/sand mix, Dont forget to wash inside the chassis too.
A fire hydrant hose is awesome to wash out the chassis too, hehe.
Then re-oil with a light coat, and ya ready to go again.

I use an air compressor and one of these to get the oil on. Its the red can on the left of the pic.

i sprayed mine with fish oil and then covered it with bitumised tar.
The tar sticks to the fish oil and goes rock hard after about 3 weeks.

ive heard alot of guys using tar. i have used fish oil and was a bitch it makes bolts bigger and all hat crap and never dried and sand stuck to it. but yet there was no rust and i owned it for 6 months and done alot of beach trips, and it wasnt just driving normaly on hard sand, it was spraying sand everywhere by drifting and donuts and all that crap you do on the beach as a sensible driver :D. but my question is as mrrocky said i wouldnt mind doing fish oil then the tar but where do you buy the tar and whats a price on the stuff??

It is was done by a reputable firm they would have given a guarrantee with the job. :P

ive fitted plenty of electronic rust prevention systems and they just dont work. Ive seen them rust under the pads and all different places. Just wash your car right. use a hose instead of high presure. flood everything. But if you do get talked into elec rust system id recomend you read small print.
you can mix fish oil with a underbody product to make it less sticky

super cheep sell body deadener its tar stuff but its cheeper at bunnings its called bituminised tar there they keep it in the roofing isle goes for $38 somethin a tin of 4kg when mixed down its plenty

yeah thats the stuff, but it can be messy and your car will stink for a while with the fish oil but at least it wont rust.

There is cheap Fish Oil, and there is better Fish Oil... i found that the Fish Oil hardens up over time, and becomes less sticky... :wink: :lol:

i used this stuff on my zook after i did all the rust repairs, i wouldnt i wouldnt really reccomend it for the underside but it is great for inside sills and doors etc. i sell the stuff and it seems quite popluar. any panel and paint guys on here would know it for sure. it comes in pressure pack and also spray gun setup.

you can get odorless fish oil from supercheap i used it last time and it was great. also just wondering when you say mix it down do you mix it down with the fish oil. or do you fish oil let it sit for a while then tar? soon as i get all my rust repaired i am planning on doing something like this. and then use something like the wurth stuff that eldo used on the inside of the car. as im looking at installing marine carpet right through the car with slits in the carpet around the bungs that way it still has the daily clean car feel but i can then also flood it or wash it out so want to spray the interior so it wont rust under the carpet.

Assuming you are talking about decent systems and not the $3 shit from ebay then they arent working cause you are fitting it wrong, you need to have a decent coat of paint under the pads, read the fine print :wink:

I live on the coast, I work not far from teh coast in a corrosive environment, the vit is always outside and went for about 18months with a bare steel patch exposed and there was no rust evident over that time, only ever light oxidisation over the top

compared to my mini, thats in a garage and regularily needs to have surface rust cleaned up, and it hasnt even been wet in the last 12 months!!!

if you do fish oil or whatever you need to let it dry before going near mud or sand, this takes a while, body deadener is no good, it sets hard from teh heat and cracks to allow moisture in so your floor rusts and you dont know till you put your foot through it

mix the fish oil or the tectal (tectal dont smell ) and then just brush it or spray it on ive never worried about one at a time it dries black and my experiance is its never cracked at all maybe cause its a mixturre or somethin

Seems a lot of yanks use something called Line-X tray liner underneath. Anyone tried this, or Rhino-liner, Herculiner, Speedliner, etc...?
