wanting to get some info on how to change the rear brakes to disc, I heard u can use gti rear brakes or maybe vitara front disc n caliper. Any info would be great thanks Nic |

Nissan Pintara (unsure of model) rear discs can be made fit using adaptor plates. |

I have a kit here ready to fit to my car whenever I get time. If it doesn't need any mods and works well I'll get a few more made up... I'm using Sierra front discs and Pintara/Magna rear calipers with integrated handbrake. The caliper mount doubles as the bearing retainer. Dearest part of the kit will be custom handbrake cables. |

I remember a topic about this a while back, some that have done rear disc brake conversions love it and say that it is an improvement, while others have ended up going back to originals because they could not get it right. When the topic of bias came up some people said you just throw a proportioning valve in to stop it locking the rear brakes but no one could actually say what proportioning valve or where to get it or how to set it up leading me to believe that they had heard about it but hadn't actually done it themselves. I think that the idea of hit and miss, try a caliper from here and a rotor from there is a bit scary and could lead to your death or that of someone else. I also think that most people think that it is an improvement because they do the conversion when their original braking system is stuffed or close to it so just having a functioning braking system is better than they had before. I think that anyone doing a rear disc conversion on a vehicle should then have the vehicle tested for a brake efficiency on a properly calibrated electronic decelerometer of better still a roller brake tester like at the Qld Transport pits to see if the upgrade is better than standard or not, a drive aound the block standing on the brakes is not conclusive in my opinion. I remember during some other debate over this topic that Joeblow had success by upgrading to a 2 litre Vitara booster and master cyl which made a significant difference to the feel and performance of standard disc drums and that Royce was impressed with the result he got by upgrading to front and rear discs brakes from a LWB vitara. I think that if you fit rear discs fit the coresponding front discs, master cyl and booster so that the upgrade is all matched. Finally, if you get your Suzuki brakes working to their full potential you probably won't need a conversion. |

Doesn't matter how efficient drum brakes are if you drive through mud they destroy themselves very quickly.... The ONLY reason I want disc rear is so I don't have to replace shoes every month or so... I'll be happy if the rear discs are only as effective as the drums. However I don't think I'll be needing any proportioning valve as the calipers are designed for rear use and the master on a Magna has same bore size as Sierra. |

you can buy a kit off lowrangeoffroad.com that just uses sierra front discs and calipers. |

I'm running sierra front calipers on the rear of my tray with the 1 1/16" forester GT master cylinder. I have no problems with proportioning, however, I have 100" wheelbase. I've driven a car with the same setup by basically stock SWB wheelbase and it is a tiny bit to rear biased on dirt. I'm sure it's fine on tarmac. If you need to back the rears off a bit, you can use a prop valve from lowrange offroad or spidertrax. I have 1000000% better pedal feel with rear discs, not to mention the reliability. I've done a few muddy trips with them and the pedal feels the same :armsup: Steve. |

Im running LWB Vit front calipers, and Mazda 323 calipers on rear with the Forester M/C, and my proportioning is almost perfect without a prop valve. |

Do us all a favour so we can see if you have improved your braking efficiency have your car evaluated at least on an electronic decelerometer, scan in the printout and post it up for us to see. Want33's, mate I am sure you are exagerating wildly when you said "so I don't have to replace shoes every month or so..." but seriously I don't see how you can be so certain that sierra front discs, pintara rear discs and magna master cyl is going to be a perfect match of components. There is a formula in relation to caliper volume, line volume, displacement, stroke etc, etc etc that is worked out by vehicle engineers that have forgotten more about brakes than we will ever know. |

I've slowed down lately but when I didn't mind mud so much, 4 trips to Glasshouse in a month and I'd have a low pedal and no handbrake. Pull the drums and they would be almost down to metal. The mud out there is very abrasive and eats brakes and seals too damn quickly. As I said above I really don't care if Sierra discs/Pintara calipers/magna master aren't a PERFECT match as long as the car stop s as well as it does with drums I'll be happy as I won't be needing to replace brake shoes or wheel cylinders any more. NOTE: My car isn't driven on public roads. |
