altenator has died (i think its the regulator it read 15.5v some times and less than 13 others) i have a new alternator to go in it but i was wondering if its possible to piggy back an external regulator on the shot one. If so how? ( i would like to keep a spare regulator on hand in case it happens hundreds of k's from anywhere) |

No mate.. No way to piggy back an external off an internal.. You could keep a spare internal one and pull it apart and replace it.. Not that hard of a job to do |

you can piggie one on. make sure ya brush box above ground. (youll have to do this) then solder some 3mm wire off both brushs and you can use either a re55 bosch reg or wat ever to regulate your rotor voltage. we do this to large bosch alt's. but it can be done on any alt. |

I have seen pigging backing of regulators, but it is definately not recommended, there is too many possibilities of failure. as fatzook wrote, carry a spare internal regulator. They don't take long to change and are normally very reliable. |

Another question.. Anyone know what the minimum RPM is for a self exciting Regulator to kick in? Apparently there is an 'upgrade'that suits the sierra style plug that makes the regulator self exciting and being a bit old school i like to retain the ability to push start my ride  (but being able to push start with 0 volts would be cool  )
