I would get an electric, as there is minimal storage in my car for anything.

X 2...
Tirfors are for emergency use only... To be used if your electric winch dies and you can't get ANY other help.

if your really cheap get 4 or 5 snatch blocks and some good rope. this has got me out of a jam lots of times. you can add a high lift and some chain if you want.

Whats the down side to winches?

You have to beef up the electrical system?
There out in the weather all the time? Are they water tight?

The winch and the bar to support it, adds a lot of weight over the front of the car.

you need to service winches, have to wire them up and most of the time you need a 2nd battery. they use a lot of power. in saying tat they are the ducks guts for a lazy man

for me snatch blocks are the go. that and 120 m of rope in a milk crate with a few shackles. i have pulled out my old sierra when is was up to the chassis in mud. took awhile but worked

shit shit shit shit shit

told you I would swear everytime you posted pics from your private collection Joe

Hand winches are awesome, when somebody else is stuck and you have some shade and a chair and a beer to watch :)

If you go that way a drag chain with a slip ring and shortening hook one end and a shortening hook the other end makes life a lot easier to rig up as well, I also made a new longer T handle up so that 2 people could swing it opposite each other, I called it my twin motor mod :)

ha ha no i had the bits from my climbing days so it didn't cost me anything. yes i'm tight, i own a sierra :D

if i can't get myself out with that and a shovel a winch isn't going to get me out.

I would take the weight of an electric over the pain of hand winch any day. Saved my ass in many a situation far from help over the years.

Pulled more than a few others out of trouble as well. Two or three every year every winter, in the mud or on the Oregon beaches.

I once saw an interesting setup that did allow you to pull the car backwards from an electric winch... a lot of hard work and customisation went into it though...

its pretty hard to explain but i'll try...

The winch was mounted on a custom frame somewhere in the middle of the car. The winch cable went to the front of the car, and just before it got to the rollers mounted on the bullbar, it went around a block (like a snatchblock sort-of) and then went to a set of rollers at the back of the car where it was secured to (at a load rated point)

when he wanted to pull himself forward, he spooled out some slack into the cable, pulled the loop through the front rollers and put a snatch block over the loop, and attached that snatchblock to the anchor point (and left the very end of the winch cable secured to the load rated point at the back of the car.

when he wanted to pull himself backwards, he simply unhooked the end of the winch cable and hooked it up to the anchor point.

Pro's and cons that i can see:

Pro's:
Already setup with Snatch block for forwards pull (ie: twice winch power)
Can pull from front or rear

Con's
Cable possibly exposed for damage when not in use
Long cable required (especially for forwards pull as its doubled up.)

I always wondered whether you could make a strong enough mounting point in the engine bay somewhere and have the winch facing directly down to another very strong mounting point where a block is attached and the end of the cable is secured. All you'd need then is to get under the car when you need a winch, and pull the cable through whichever rollers you want...

Meh, even a Tirfor's better sometimes... Digging tunnels in mud was fun when i was 5.

If your clever and you've got 3 snatch block's,you can pull a car backwards with it's front mounted winch. No special mods required...
