| Post subject: | fuel consumption whats am i doing wrong? |
hey guys I've got a 1.3 in my Sierra I've had this fuel consumption problem since I got the car. I had one weber on it,then I got rid of it and put a standard carby back on it. It was still shit like 160kms to a tank, then i changed to another weber. The previous owner said he got 300 to 350 to a tank and i still got 160kms to a tank. I had a electric fuel pump on it so I took that off and put a new mechanical fuel pump on it. I blew out the feed & return line because i thought the return line might be blocked and forcing fuel into it.l I've changed everything except for the tank and cap. oh and i adjusted the throttle so it only opens the primary throat so the secondary throat wont open. I have even tried driving like a grandma as well, what else can i do? |

its the 1.3 with a 1ltr transfer not sure on diff ratios they are 89wt diffs and 32's on it. ive rebuilt the engine and its just about ready to get its first service. but since the carby was gettin good fuel consumption before i dont think that its the carb and 3 carbys did the same thing. |

you need to work out the actual distance traveled, due to the transfer case & bigger tyres your speedo will be out massively. |

Trans or diff gears will sort out your fuel useage problems. I get 200ks out Of a tank now. On the road I can go from darwin to katherine on a tank, I think that is 350ks. I should proberly state that I only have 2 gauges that work, temp and fuel.haha ha |

The previous owner was full of shit maybe? 350km on that setup is pretty ambitious. |

What do all your plugs look like? How is your timing? How dented is your fuel tank? I started getting annoyed at having a 160km range, mainly because my stock fuel tank would only hold about 20L. |

timing spot on and it has a dint but it holds 35L so does anyone know the formula to work it out |

I would inspect your plugs, and see what they look like. How is your airfilter? and what sort of driving do you do? Long slow cruises, or lots of short city trips where you flog the ass out of it? Or long cruises at wide open throttle (WOT)? etc. If its too hard, just fit a much larger fuel tank. I put a vitara fuel tank in mine. As a DD i use stock wheels and have 6.5 transfer gearing installed. 100km/h is like 4400 rpm. With my 32x9.5 pedes on (33.4 OD) i get decent fuel consumption. But obviously not enough to warrant the annoying noise and extra cost of tearing up my pedes. With stock tyres I have recently been getting: at 80km/hr on the highway i get 8l/100km. At WOT on the highway i've been getting about 14L/100. Doing city driving im getting 14/L/100km currently too. I have also been having issues with 1 cyclinder running rich at WOT. Which is why i was so down on power and using a lot extra fuel on the highway. Only discovered the issue, when I inspected the plugs. Hopefully it is sorted now. |

32's are 23% larger than factory... so whatever your odometer says, add 23%... ie: 160km = 196.8 - which is still crap. I get about 260-280km from a tank (30L) with 5.14 tcase gears and 31s (simex ETs) (92 WT sierra). Pretty happy with that - of course i'd like more, but with that tyre choice i cant expect better. Oh - and mines 1.6 EFI too - that accounts for a little more fuel usage. |

Oh - and mines 1.6 EFI too - that accounts for a little more fuel usage. So you have smaller tires, and lower T-case gearing, its not surprising you get better economy then... If you wanna run 32s and get reasonable road performance from them, you need to get the right gears... 6.5s would be the go... |
