engaging the hubs means all the drive train components will be turning, even if you are in 2wd. that might cause unnecessary wear.
same as if you drive in 4H around town. If the road is dry and you have good grip front and rear you'll be causing unnecessary wear on all drive train components, front and rear because the front and rear will be fighting each other.
