Post subject:  undong 24 year old bolts?

hey guys well got the engine all disconnected ready for my replacement engine and I have 1 bolt on the lower passenger side of the gearbox to undo and its being a prick...

I know there was an article in 4wd Action bout how to undo really stubborn bolts but I cant find it...

any quick ideas?

Tried CRC, pulling a rope attach to ratchet, car jack between ratchet and sump... (I know not the best ideas but was getting grumpy at it)

heat some times works

definitely heat... but be careful of course =) haha

depending on the size of the nut, could try an impact driver too...

leverage is your friend.
aslong as the nut/bolt head isn't rounded and you can get a socket fully onto it, use a breaker bar. if it still wont budge add a piece of pipe to the end of the breaker bar.

if you cant get a socket onto it, only a spanner, put the ring end of the spanner onto the bolt head, then get a similar sized spanner and put the ring end of that spanner onto the open end of the first spanner to get more leverage.

Wurth rost off or loctite freeze and release are good products, worked for me the limited times i have used it.

Leverage breaks more bolts than anything, short sharp impacts are the trick

assuming you dont have a rattle gun, ring spanner and hammer, this is the reason why you buy quality tools, so when you need to lay into them they will survive

agreed with the short hard hits to unlock it.Using a soft face hammer or you can hit the head of the bolt straight on the end with a hammer, this helps us out a heap at work with old pumps and hydraulic gear that are rusted.sharp hard hits if you have room to swing and you will find you'll get it

hmmmm.... i tried hammering a ring spanner, and leverage... I tried a shitty air wrench but couldnt fit the air impact wrench... might have to try hitting it with a hammer or that loctite stuff...
cheers guys

Your not trying hard enough yet. Post up when you have skinned your knuckles or just got out of hospital after knocking yourself out.
Hope that helps.

Oh yeah and wehat the others have said about short sharp hits. Plenty of WD as well.

that Wurth rost off stuff works a treat!!!!

if it is really seized in try using a welder to weld a bolt on to it, make sure you can cut it off if you have to, the weld is basically to get the heat into it anyway, welded nut/bolt also helps if you have rounded off the head on the original bolt head.
good luck

well the ring spanner stripped the head of the nut... i tried chiselling it off but i think its a grinder job now.... lil fucker!!!

I had the same problem and I ended up using a 1mm thick cut off wheel and slowly cut the head of the bolt. But I had TWO of them I couldn't undo so I also had to use a die grinder bit in the drill to remove the head of the other one. Once I had the gearbox off they both unscrewed by hand.....

just finished work... borrowed a grinder to get it off but not too sure the best way to get a nut off the threaded bar without damaging the thread...

Post subject:  Re: undong 24 year old bolts?

Grinder is stupid massive 5inch with no guard and only fits into the cavity sideways so could potentially hit the thread and fuck the gearbox mount... Fuck! Oh and it also has no switch and is permenantly on so will have to get someone to unplug/plug it in instead of off/on button... This I'd a recipe for disaster... I also smashed my girls new Honda jazz's rear window and side mirror while whipper snippeting at work today... Yay for today!

Is that cheating? Bringing in international help to get a bolt undone?
