| Post subject: | dizzy cap - should I change it?? |
I was checking condition of dizzy cap and found out that it those four 'pins' are half worn ( or maybe burnedout ) I've never seen new dizzy cap, so have no idea if thats normal or should be replaced. could you give me advice. Thanks. if I Change cap should I change rotor? Does it need to be cleaned? Chris |

Chris Hi... the half worn pins are normal... however, i did notice your dizzy cap has a crack in it, near the C-1 pin, and therefore should be replaced... also looking at the carbon the spark leaves on the pins, it looks like your timing is out, as the grey carbon on the pins should be right across the notch in the pins, but yours looks like its only 3/4 across the pins... and i also noticed that some of the pins have a darker carbon on them, grey carbon is normal, dark carbon indicates there is bad contact somewhere, so yes change the rotor as well, then see how it goes...

You can tell all that from a photo, I'm impressed!!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it. But I would pay close attention to the crack if it is one. |

I don't think it's a crack, it look's like it's part of the moulding. As Rusho mentioned, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. If you car's running fine but you're concerned that this is an issue and may lead to a breakdown. You could always buy a spare in case of this happening. |

Chris, A new cap and rotor will cost you about $25 all up - Just buy them and keep them on your car for when one does fail. Your cap is looking like it is just about done (but the mark is just a scratch from removing the cap I am guessing), but you can try and clean all the surfaces with a small wire brush if you like. You may notice a small increase in performance as well by doing this... Call me if you need help. |

I don't understand this. why buy a part like this and then keep it as a spare, I would be more inclined to buy it and fit it, then if you really want keep the old one as a spare. but seriously, for the sake of $25 just chuck them and replace them again with new when required. |

Cool, put the new one on and keep the old one for a spare... i would also get a new rotor if it hasnt been changed in a while, as the spark wears off the brass end, and gives you more gap, which the spark has to jump, but it uses alot of its energy to jump the bigger gap, so you may only get half the spark at the plugs, which equel's less engine power...
