So the noise is there, no matter which gear you select? and in both 4x4 and 2x4 on the transfer?

Are you sure it is coming from the centre of the car? not a diff or wheel bearing?

No obvious looseness or leakage from any of the shaft uni's or in the diff pinions, etc?

Next step would be to get it up on a hoist, and have listen while underneath.

My moneys on the uni joints... It was exactly the same in my car recently, as soon as you started accelerating you could hear the sound of metal tapping on metal until you got up in revs, then it disappeared...

Put the car in gear, Get under the car and try rolling the drive shaft or tail shaft around - there should be no movement at all. If there is a fair bit of play, replace the uni joints - only costs around $50 for a set of two, and you can do it yourself on a saturday afternoon... (i did it last saturday arvo) (a uni joint press makes it a lot easier - if you don't have one, you'll want a socket set, a good hammer, and a can of WD40)
