Hi guys, I'm just getting my feet wet in the 'suzuki' world, I picked up a 90 SWB vitara that's rapidly becoming my transport of choice...the only thing that lets it down is the lethargic carby-fed motor. A Baleno conversion seems like a good place to start, the only major problem I can see is the dizzy. What's the best way around this? Apparently a Vitara cam and dizzy will solve it, but how hard/expensive are they to come by?

You can get a 90 angle drive that bolts up no problem. They are made by Denzo I will get the number for you I just have to talk to the guy that has it.
I will return once I have it.

ohh and to add sorry... the balino 1.6 with the stand alone coils you wont have to worry about the dizzy. and secondly the Vitara 1.6 has a lot less messing around with water hoses and making wire harnesses longer from what I have heard.

Welcome to Auszookers, its always good to see another Perth Auszooker, and you have a Vitara too, Go the Vits !

Your Carby fed motor is lathergic sounds like it needs a really good tuneup and service, as my 89 Vit, with a Carby fed 1.6 engine, is anything but lethargic, its is very spritely, and it has done 230,000km !
The carby is the weakest link, performance wise, if the carby isnt tuned right, or is not working well, you will get a lethargic motor...

I would suggest you take it to the guys at Suzistore, 74 Elgee Rd, Midland, they are Zook only mechanics and parts suppliers, good bunch of guys, they know their Zooks, and let them work their magic !

Haha, to be honest, I want to get away from carbies anyway. Having messed with EFI for so long, I find it a lot more reliable and easy to tune/understand Plus the extra 20kw wouldn't go astray...

The Denzo angle drive, any idea of a supplier? Unless it's a 'Denso' part?

suzistore quote $7500 for a 1.6 efi 16v conversion to a sierra, id imagine it wouldnt be too much cheaper for a vit.
Pete at the suzuki shop in beckingham just finished a mates conversion drive in drive out for $4300 with a new h/d clutch.
I have the series one baleno motor in mine but it has had the vitara dizzy and cam installed. Still a waterpipe from the thermostat housing at the back of the motor needs to be run accross the exhaust to the radiator which isnt ideal. I will take your 1.6 carby motor off your hands when your ready.

This is what so many people told me to do. So i got the coilpack motor.

Also, water above the exhaust. I have done it. gwagonsteve has run a water pipe under the intake manifold before..

Where abouts did you source your dizzy from, and what was it worth? I think I've got motor, dizzy bracket and cam sourced so far...

Ok, motor sourced, cam/bracket sourced...and I *think* I can use my carby dizzy (it's got the same 2-wire connector as the Baleno, I'm going to take a gamble that the output is the same, unless anyone can enlighten me?)

Hopefully get it in in the next few weeks...Does anyone know where I can get an ECU pinout chart for the Baleno ECU?

what series motor ? the one with the coilpacks on the rocker cover or the single one that mounts to the firewall.

i've done a few of those conversions.....and it was cheaper than that. and thats after having to buy a half-cut.

$4300 is still better than $7500. mine cost me $400 with a 5spd

Single coil, standard-ish dizzy arrangement...

This is what i used from memory. you can pull the top off the ecu and should be able to read on the circuit board what some stuff is in abbreviated form ner the pinouts just to make sure the diagram matches your ecu.
DO NOT go powering stuff up with the ecu connected until you are reasonably sure its correct, or bang.
for a fuel pump i run a carby lift pump feeding a efi (vl commo) pump and the standard tank.

Dave, do you have any more details on this part? Denso Ausralia say the part number does not exist on there system so they never brought it into Australia.
Suzuki also have no trace of these part numbers in there system.

Anyhelp would be great. Or even the guys number if you have it. Or give him my number.

Well, mine's up and running. I used the vitara dizzy from my carb vitara, modified it to remove the vac advance and use the trigger from the baleno dizzy. It's all running, and very sweetly too But still some interesting problems, it feels flat, doesn't like more than 30% throttle, and won't rev past 3200 without major ignition misfire. I think this is *hopefully* the rotor cap/button, which I'll change this weekend...

Running sweetly, but backfiring?

Sounds to me like the removal of the vacumn advance is causing this problem...
