hey all, im currently doing a bit of rust repair on my vitara's door sill. i cleaned up all the surface rust yesterday and then sanding it back till it was nice and smooth. then taped at up the applied some white knight surface primer, i applied 3 coats and then was left over night as i had to go out. this morning i then sanded it back so the masked tape edge wasnt felt,(tape was removed yesterday as car was driven around) once it was all smooth again i masked it up again, and applied to 1st coat of white night gloss white, waited about 25-30 mins then gave it a brief sand then applied another coat. b4 applying the second coat i had noticed that in certain areas it was rougher the usual. (presumed just bad spray from can) After about 40 mins of drying i went to go apply another coat and noticed that the paint had cracked in some areas(same areas as rough patchs). the best way to describe it would be that to top layer had slid away from the bottom layer, as if the bottom layer was wet and the top layer was dry. the area that is being painted is only about 50mm by 300mm and in the door recces, so i dont really care how it looks, but dont really want cracked paint. should i just try an sand it back and see if it goes away? then spray again? thanks, sorry about the essay lol Mitch |

Incompatible paint. The paint you are applying does not like, nor will it ever, the paint on the car, and so, its useless to you for this job. |

thanks for the fast reply, Suziblu- i thought about that, but thats why i put down to primer. Joseph- i dont have any prepsol or anything 100% for wax and grease removing but i wiped it down with white spirits, and then i used mineral turpentine to remove so tape residue. i dont think there would be any wax or grease on there. what can i do??? just put another coat on, hopefully it will become less visible with more coats. like i said i dont really care how it looks, the paint /body is already in less than average condition. thanks Mitch |

Mate I guess you are using a spray can, is the paint you are using enamel or acrilic is it car paint or general purpose?? |

yeah mate, out of a spray can. yeah the paint is a quick dry gloss enamel. and general purpose. i used the stuff when painting my rims and came out perfectly. Mitch |

hey what grit sand paper did you use? you can get pressure packs/spray cans from auto barn that they match to your car colour i would say to use that. cost more but it is auto paint so it will come out better greg |

ok now the real reason the reason you are having dramas is the products you are using are emamels and the are NOT under any circumstances supposed to be sanded between coats as it will cause the finish to fry up. the ONLY paints designed to sand between coats are acrylic and nitrocellulose. Two pack and enamels are supposed to be painted one coat after another with a flash off time (usually 5 - 15 minutes) if you cannot apply a new coat in less that say 35 -40 minutes your supposed to allow the product to properly cure, which depending on product and conditions could take up to a week before recoating. any other questions pm me if you like. cheers andrew |

hey, Slowsierra - i was using 400 grit, yeah i thought about that but i dont really have the money to spend on something that know one will ever really see. that why i own a zook lol. ajsr- i can understand that and thats prob the reason. i had a read on the back of the can and it says respray after 1hr, i knew that an hr was to long so i was doing it about 30-40 mins. i didnt know that about not sanding between coat with enamels, i guess u dont get taught that kind of detail with a 10 week spray course lol. i removed the tape as i had enough for a day, and it hasnt turned out that bad, unless ur looking really closely u wont notice it. ill give the taped edge a sand tomorrow as its a bit rough. thanks for the input guys, Mitch |
