What i noticed though is the tendecy of the zombie world survivors to pick big hulking american brutes to drive around in. i mean the things are freakin gas guzzlers

Myself i see the Suzuki sierra (alright the same era vitara too) as the ultimate post apocalyptic vehicle, they are simple, robust, can climb over curbs and panic strewn-detrius, fit through spaces most other car don't and have good fuel economy for a carby engine.
Hardtop/soft tops protection aside i think i would keep my sierra stock with the only conventional mod being the addition of Long range fuel tank (ok maybe loot some tyres, but nothing massive)

Then it the mods would be
Get rid of all the pollution gear like the cat conveter
Jet the carb so it a point was rich enough to run a lean ethanol (scaveging fuel like metho and other solvents, the ability to make it once petrol runs out)
an ENDLESS AIR set up from an aircon
have a euro-style gas carb so i could run jury-rigged lpg bbq cylinders and a woodgas convertor
Small light 3x3 trailer to carry scavenged supplies with an emergency release mechanism in case it gets stuck or is slowing me down.(maybe a small sub-80kg pitbike or scooter for scouting mounted on a rear rack with tool stowage)


So what other ideas to people have, it doesn't necessarily have to be zombies, the above is suited for the mad-max post end war scenarios etc. Basically something that you have to survive indefinately without infrastructure (LJ's are cool too but would suit more as an auxilary vehicle)
Who knows, maybe some interesting tech ideas come up that can be applied to veryday rigs

Auto, hard to get good fuel economy if its a carb and one of the reasons you can't buy a pre 2004 auto in brazil is the self taught greas monkeys cant service them and they break long before the manual box

The stock aisin carby. Runs period, in tune, out of tune, no electrics, ieven if the vacuum hoses are joked, i wouldn't go the webber.

What i would concede is maybe a basic piggy back MPFI system with wideband o2 would be good, run a seperate set of lines and an external fuel pump. Run it and keep the carby circuit as a fallback

I may need to get out more but damn it when i do at least my zook will make it there!

Already exists... and in use in Afghanistan/Iraq. pictured below is a remote weapon system with .50 that mounts on vehicles featuring thermal/nightvisions and all good stuff hooked up to a little screen with joystick

Carbies are good, but what you want is a big bore single cylinder 2 stroke diesel from an old Lanz Bulldog tractor:

Will run on vegetable oil, creosote or just about anything that will burn, good fuel economy, will run in either direction, can be started by rocking the flywheel backwards and forwards by hand.

The vibrations might be a bit much in a Suzuki though.....
