Post subject:  Sierra wont idle. HELP, before it burns to the ground!!

Hi,

I have a 94 SWB Sierra soft top and cant seem to get the thing to idle correctly. I had a hole in the fuel tank a few weeks ago, so I drained the tank and repaired with steel epoxy. Then after 2 tank refills, it started to not idle. As in I was driving down the highway, then turned off to a set of lights, put the foot on the clutch and the thing stalled. Pulled over and found a vacuum leak into the carbie. Cut hose, refitted and away I was for another week. Now it bucks and surges when taking off but seems to rev ok when coasting. Just still wont idle. Changed fuel filter, removed fuel tank to inspect, all ok. Fuel lines, plugs, leads, distributor cap, charcoal canister all seem ok.

When you start it, it now idles for 5 - 10 seconds and then "starves" and stalls. Removed air top thing from carbie and sprayed carbie cleaner down it while it was running, to clear some crap out. Fuel seems to pump through jet when you pump accelerator. If you try and start it straight after it stalls you have to pump accelerator, but if you let it sit for 30 secs or so it seems to start by itself straight away, idles for 5 - 10 secs then stalls again, and so on..

At first it just wouldn't idle. You could rev the crap out of it and drive it normally. Now it wont idle and runs rough, bucking and surging, but may run ok for a few kms and then it just dies, bucks, surges, until you have to stop it.

I really need some advise before it "sets ""itself"" on fire"

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a blocked idle port. Hold the revs up and choke the top of the carby with a rag, but don't let it stall. Do this a couple times and see if that helps.

Idle jets blocked?

Take the airbox of the carby, give it a good rev then smother the top of the carby with a rag and it'll suck all the crap out the jets...

If that doesnt work, take the air box off the carby, swap #2 & #3 plug leads around and start the engine. Let it back fire through the carby a few times (it doesnt need to be reved to high), turn it off and put back to normal.

WARNING - DONT do this in an enclosed garage, with the bonnet down or with your head over the top of the carby.

Just an update.... (actually there are posts missing - might have been lost in upgrades that auszookers have been doing)

Anyway, I ended up taking the old girl down to a mechanic to see what he thought. Said the carby was the culprit, and it would require a rebuild. Just picked up a second hand one to see if it helps or not.

Will update again when I know more.

Ok so I have rebuilt the carby and can now seem to get the thing to idle, but.... When you go to rev it or turn lights on for the idle up actuator, it seems to hesitat and actually idle rough... Is this a too rich symptom??

maybe he just bumped the float ajustment a tad and its flooding a bit, and both of the 1.3's we had gave us problems like this all the time, just remember to cross the plug leads, get's ya out of trouble anywhere
