Hi guys,

I'm looking at making my car a little quieter. So far i've replaced my window regulators along with the weatherstrips and baileys channel rubber and the internal door panel.

Next step is to pull out the dash/seats and weld up all the holes that have been drilled into the firewall and floor over the years, and then i was looking at throwing a quick coat of paint and some sound deadening material over it.

I have heard this "dynamat extreme" is supposed to be pretty good (paying $200 for 3.5 square meters, it had better be good) but i was wondering if anyone else has used it? I'm planning on possibly running it on the internal and external firewall, the internal floor, and the internal foot-well sides (not the whole side of the car)

I've also asked the seller if its waterproof, can anyone here confirm that? (the seller could be slightly optimistic to make a sale)

Will probably lay some marine carpet or vinyl on top of the dynamat to make it look all pretty, and to protect the dynamat from wear.

if you have a compressor go and see Trevor at Palmerston paint supply's. he is a fair dinkum wanker but he really knows paint.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about how good the paint looks after application, I was probably going to use something like "RustBullet" for the job (read their webpage - http://www.rustbullet.com/ ). I know there are some paints out there that say they quieten the noise down, but i don't think they will ever do as good a job as something that actually has some padding to absorb the sound.

I was more after the effects that dynamat has on quietening the engine and road noise.

I just cut up some underlay and put it down on the interior, has lowered road noise and if it gets wrecked I'm not fussed, was $40 for 2m x 3m, just cut some more out.

Used this stuff - Clicky - Under the bonnet and inside the doors. Will put some in the inside firewall in future as well when I have the dash off.

The biggest pain in hte arse noise is still the soft top and its flapping though

when im done with this latest round of uni assignments im going to put this style of sound deadening on the inside of the firewall and around the wheel arches.

had my eye on dynamat and no-name equivalents from ebay and insulation shop here. im sure there would be a noticeable difference once the deadener is applied, but the difference between brands would be negligible.

I've got about a grand worth of dynamat matting in my daily driver. 4 dynamat xtreme bulk packs.

Great stuff. Does wonders for vibrations and resonance.
Will help with the road noise and heat also.

I'll be putting 2 bulk packs it in my maruti when I take the dash out soon to fit a new heater box.

You need to get the surface CLEAN before application. I can't emphasise that enough. Any air pockets beneath the mat and you've wasted your time.

4 Packs seem slightly excessive... have you put them down 2 layers thick? I was budgeting on max of 2 xtreme bulk packs to cover the car, Although if you recommend a certain number of layers I'll do that.

In a zook, that much material is excessive. It's in my daily driver - I used it to compete in soundoffs for ~10 years.

In a zook 1 layer of dynamat would make a monumental difference.
Each additional layer shows diminishing returns as it's primary purpose is to add weight to the panel providing vibration dampening.

I would use no more than 2 layers in a zook.
For my maruti, I'm planning for 1 layer to doors, rear of cab and drivers side floor.
Firewall and passenger side floor (above exhaust) will get 2 layers.

slightly on topic....those silver window sunshades work amazingly well at doing this.

lined my firewall and floor pan in the front with one in my datsun1600, and under the rear seats. stopped huge amounts of heat and alot of drone from the exhaust for a very minimal outlay. (good option for those of us on budgets)

I put Improved Heavy Duty Sound Barrier Absorbing / Damping Material from Jaycar in the footwells of mine under the carpet.

Was a pain in the arse to stick down - had to use messy contact adhesive.
I believe the Dynamat stuff comes with a sticky back for easy application...

Does the Jaycar stuff smell like tar once it gets hot?
They had a real problem with that in years past.

No. Doesn't smell like anything much at all really.
The main problem is it comes in small sort of strip pieces, so you hAve to buy a number of pieces.

that j car stuff that smells like tar is different to what paulv is talking about. the Stuff that smells like tar is still around tho. I did both doors with dynamat in a hilux ute when i installed a new stereo system it makes a big difference to the sound output and quality as well as the volume level ya can get too befor the doors start to rattle. the new speakers still dont distort befor the doors start to rattle. iv also noticed that the doors feel far more solid and are far easier for the missus to slam now hahaha. i used some of the cheep jcar stuff that is like dynamat but smells like tar (as it is really just tar) and it is ok but doesnt stick anywhere near as well as dynamat nore does it have the same weight.
