i am about to put recovery hooks on the jimny and plan on drilling holes to mount them. is this a big no-no? from what i can find... come people say "NEVER DRILL HOLES IN A CHASSIS!" and others say it is fine.... i cant see any problem with it... how can they be different from any other factory drilled holes in any other car? not like the front 10cm of the chassis is under a whole lot of stress.... what do you guys think???? thanx ben |

its not the holes you need to worry about but getting the whole lot strong enough, those hooks are a fair shit idea on anything other than a 40 series that has holes in the chassis for it already |

Just stay clear of mount's, crush tube's & or plate's help to. I drill hole's in rail's all the time, but I'm a Suzuki special tool.

Reinforcement . what he said, youll just tear the whole thing out of the chassis, not to mention them all being chinese shit that pulls straight anyway you really need to make something up using stuff that spreads the load into a big area that can handle it and not fail or damage the car |

not having a dig, just curious - but doesnt that create a fulcrum / lever when recovering? ie: the load on the recovery point is diagonal to the mounting point - hence weakening it? |

i don't know i stole it off the interweb... it's an "outback ideas" recovery hook for a pootrol, i'd say it would be alot better that the normal recovery hooks you get from 4wd shops. i'd be building something similar to that but so it extends straight out from the chassis out of 12mm plate & bolting it in with crush tubes & a substantial backing plate. here are the rest of his photos from his photobucket account showing the damage the original hook did to the pootrol chassis which is twice as thick as the zooks. http://s136.photobucket.com/albums/q200 ... d%20Bolts/

that damage was done with the original tow hooks & by the look of it there is no backing plates or crush tubes. |

I was going to put some hooks on the Jim but after looking at the factory recovery points i decided I couldn't do any better. Late jimnys have crap tie downs but the early ones are pretty good. |
