Okay, just bought my first sierra :D Off one of the boys here on the forum.

My front RHS hub is engaged and won't disengage. I've removed is as per the workshop book.

I removed the cap. found a spring and a clutch but they weren't connected. Am I right in suspecting that as being my problem?

I took some photos but can't get them off my iphone >.>

Hopefully someone understands what i'm talking about!

Hey Glavas,

Welcome to auszookers & well done on getting a zook!

I found this website handy when rebuilding my FWH's for the first time.

http://www.off-road.com/offroad/article ... ?id=399668

Just watch out for the detent spring & ball that will fly across the workshop when removing the dial part from the outer housing.

You need another locking hub, can't just buy the spring.

Post subject:  Re: Can't unstick free wheel hub.

No the spring and the cap cant be separated.

Can u turn the dial on the cap now that you have pulled it all aprt or is the cap still jammed?

How much experience have you had pulling apart hubs?

So i need the whole hub? here I was hoping it was just the cap :(

Where do I go to source rebuild kits?

First 4x4! done plenty with RWD cars...

i'm certain any of the aisin 26 spline FHW will have the same springs & most likely the internal are the same.

The cap spins fine it'll spin from free to lock now. it's just not attached to the clutch. (The clutch is the gear shaped thing?)

In all honest, I've never worked on anything 4x4 only some AWD. Never worked on anything non IFS either :(

Disassembly of hub body
The hub body assembly consists of 6 parts: The hub body itself, the inner hub, the free wheeling hub ring, a washer between the hub ring and the hub body, and two lock rings. Remove the large inside lock ring near the base of the hub body, and slide out the inner hub, hub ring, and washer. Remove the smaller outside lock ring to separate these parts from each other.

Disassembly of cap
While gripping the dial with one hand, with the other hand press the clutch against the cap and turn counter-clockwise, in the manner you would open a child safety cap on a bottle of medicine. Note that there are two springs of similar diameter. This is normal, but the two springs are sometimes mistaken as one broken spring. Separate the springs from the pawl and clutch, carefully noting their alignment for future installation.

The springs are the parts that actually move the clutch in and out. When you turn the dial to the LOCK position, the compression spring is free to press the clutch in, as soon the the splines on the inner hub and clutch line up. Conversely, when the dial is set to "free", the tension spring pulls on the clutch, which moves as soon as any bindup is relieved.

To take apart the cap itself, remove the single lock ring beneath the cap. Now, carefully press the dial inward. Inside the dial betneath the indicator arrow is a tiny spring and ball that engages detents in the cap. Don't lose these. Carefully pry off the rubber o-ring around the dial.

Haha, nah chop was great! He told me about it before hand too! Gave me some spare springs with it.

Hell he got to go out on the beach and get bogged on the test drive lol.

So, in reading this, all that's happened is that the springs have come off the clutch which it was locked and hence it stayed locked?

that sounds about right, they're pretty easy to rebuild once you work out how it all works

Post subject:  Re: Can't unstick free wheel hub.

So I currently have the clutch and cap off. that's it. The car is now no longer locked into 4x4 because the clutch is not engaged?

Is it safe to drive as it is?

Post subject:  Re: Can't unstick free wheel hub.

yeah you should be right, but it leaves it open for crap to get in there!

did you just take the outer cap off with the dial on it or did you remove the whole FWH?

Author:  Glavas [ Sun May 09, 2010 5:37 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Can't unstick free wheel hub.

just the cap with the dial and the clutch that should have been attached to the clutch.

The surround bit (the 6 x 12mm bolts) is still fitted.

So essentially, now i'm stuck in RWD until i fix it yes? I can just put back the cap without the clutch to stop stuff getting in there?

Also, the gasket between the cap and surround is buggered, should i replace that?

RWD or 3WD

yeah i'd replace that gasket, you could cut one from gasket material or use silicone

I'll get one of the qualified mechanics to lookover the cap make sure i don't skrew it up. I'll just put the cap on without the clutch for now.

and yeah, better RWD and 3WD than the 3WD and 4WD I had! Should heard it when i dropped it down gears!

Got plenty of gasket paper at work, cheers man! much appreciated.

Okay! took it to work today.

Found out it goes cap > Spring > tensioner and that the little spring is on the tensioner. Only question now; how do i attach the clutch to the tensioner??

Gday Aleks, the spring screws onto the clutch end from memory.

Did you turn it and it locked up?

Yeah that's what I thought.

I turned it, it locked up and I couldn't get it to unlock. Took it apart and found that the spring had simply come off the clutch and the clutch was holding it in lock.

However, in my process of taking it out I managed to pull the whole thing apart lol. Have recently figured out how to get it back together! just didn't know how the clutch held on :D

And chop, the car's brilliant I love it :D Shoulda seen the boys at work when I brought it into the workshop!

Yeah it probably just needs a clean and some grease, shows ya how much ive used it lately
they actually are quite a simple set up once you work out which way they go together.
Glad you like it, wait till they see it with some big dirty rubber on it

Haha :D

Went out today and bought some proper D shackles, a snatch strap and a shovel. Getting quoted up for some 30' tyres wednesday. Gotta decide between A/T or muddies by then!

Went to a 4x4 shop today and they laughed when I said I had a sierra and told me that there's not many mods you can do to them! >.>

EDIT: Yes, cleaning it up tomorrow, greasing it up and reassembling :) Gonna go to goolwa friday night and then carby off sunday to fix that little leak :)

the MT/R's that chops & I are running are well behaved on the road for a muddie & I've never had a problem with them in the sand dunes down at beachport.
