hey guys due to a million setbacks im finaly ready to paint my vitara missed the summer weather.
im doing it under my carport and have it set up with tarps blocking all four sides so no crap gets in, its gonna cop abit on the trails so im not to fussy if i get a bit crap in the paint,

im only concerned about the weather, its meant to be 22 degrees here in west sydney is that ok for the paint to actualy cure properly if i lay it on earlier in the day so it has all afternoon to cure before the cold night air rolls in?
im spraying with protec 606 acrylic enamel in jet black and will be using a fast hardener to speed things up.
would the finish still be good or would it be a bit cloudy etc? anyone spray inn these conditions before?

Go buy a cheap fan heater and heat the tarped area up. It will bloom otherwise especially if there is any moisture in the air. Leave the heater blowing air in there for a few hours

if you have a large gas BBQ pull the plate off & chuck that in there going flat out for a while before you start to paint...

and make sure you turn off any flames BEFORE you try and spray.

i thought that would have been obvious, i should have stated it in my original post. sorry... except for dak dak dave, he should blow himself up.

also it's not a great idea to keep the blow heater running while painting, heating overspray/fumes is bad for your health.

Its not so much the temperature, but the humidity that will effect the paint going on... the temp will determine the drying time... but yeah, what the others have said... keep well ventilated with fresh air, you dont want to pass out... and just turn off all naked flames and electric heaters before you start spraying... or you will be at the centre of a very nice fireball !

if the metal is cold it tends to hold moisture on the surface. the paint will lift or flake later .

try to warm up the work area and also add some accelerator to the paint and clear coat so it dry's quicker, that's what we did on mine since it wasn't sprayed in a booth

20 degree is fine
ideally as some have suggested put a heater in the area first or even in the car with the doors shut to try and get the body temp to around 20 deg.
you will not have humidity/bloom problems with 2k unless its below 10deg or over 75% hum.
you will get runs however if you lay too heavy a frirst coat on too cold a car, and yes fas hardner is what you want for an outdoor job.
2 k is ready for another coat when it is basicly touch dry/tacky to touch, and remember your NOT trying to cover the car in one coat unless you like sanding out runs
4 coats if applied proplery of 2k is shitloads and more is NOT better.

outside it may take a couple of days to cure propery but will be able to be unmasked about 5 hours later and you can drive the next day as long as your carefull. dont lean or sit anything on the paint for a couple of days and it may water spoy slightly for a coulpe of days.

again a blow heater inside the car will speed up the process buy heating the metal and paint substrate to cure quicker.

do not mix the paint and begin painting straight away , the paint and harnderer need to activate so let it sit for arount 5 minutes minimum

as I have no real respect for my zook mine was painted in my driveway with no tarping off etc
3 coats of motorspay 2k fast hardner fast reducer and a product called accerator it was touch dry after 4 minutes on the third coat and I was unmasked in 35 min
it was 4:00pm 15 deg and overcast the day I painted her
so you can use 2k in sheds ect with no heat you just need to prepare properly.

thanks for all the advice boys put my mind at ease hearing how some of you have done yours, Ajsr that came out pretty good for the conditions you did it under, well the bbqs cranking away in my home made booth nice & warm in their curing nicely thanks for the heads up ATARI
Only got two small runs on the corners of my cheezey bars easy fix though barely noticeable,
though i do have one problem on one door i leaned rite over it and in the process water dripped from my gun hose connection and yep splashed on my last coat besides that it turned out pretty good..
is it possible to buff this out later on? or is it a touch up job? the job is in protec 606 acrylic enamel,

ha ha its been marinating out the back for 2 years now should be pretty flavoursome when done pics promised for this week i had plenty of before shots on my old laptop wich had a sudden violent demise though my neighbour whos a bit of a wiz said he can remove the hard drive and put everything on a disk for me so il be doing that for sure,, you should see another rig build thread very soon, im actualy hoping some one from victoria will recognise it and maybe tell me a bit of its history it was apparently a comp truck out their.....
