after my long trip last week up the coast and back i realised that i need to fix my tunes in the lwb. it has an old school kenwood detachable face head unit, it suits it as im not upgrading unless it dies, besides no one will pinch it. it has clarion 2 ways in the kick panels and pioneer 6 inch 3 ways in the rear just behind the front seats, in front of the guards. The issue is that i cant hear it whilst im at 100km/h properley. i know my speakers are rat shit and i have a set of 6x9s to put in the rear. i am thinking of putting these vertical and on a 45 degree angle facing forwards. im also putting a set of better 6 inches in the kick panels, even with these fitted i dont reckon i will hear it.
what have you guys done to get your stereo to work, im way to old for subs these days and will settle for clarity. the other issue im continually having to turn it down when i pull up at lights as it is loud when i stop.

i also have to fix the uhf as i cant hear it either, i have a remote speaker already in and im thinking of remounting it up on the inside of the B pillar near my head, am i the only one with these problems

dont make the wireless louder, make the car quieter, get some decent sound deadening

dont angle the 6x9s either, you get nice bass kick when 2 speakers talk to each other at about that distance apart

I've got 6x9's in speaker boxes behind the seats and 5's in the kick panels

The 6x9's are only jensens but the boxs make a huge difference.

Boxs cost me 20 bucks from strathfield car radio...w/out the boxes mine sound crap.

royce it is a permanent open top sierra now, well until i need it for work so its hard to quiten it down. i could make the exhaust a little quiter as it has a 2 inch on it, but really its the road noise... i even have all terrains,, whats it gonna be like with muddies. i think i might just put my ipod on

I put some soundproof shit under my bonnet which i think dropped it slightly but not a great deal. would be a pooftinth of a db...

going to put some on the firewall when i have the dash off.

i could put the sound deadener on the floor but it will only get wet when i go wheelin etc. i was thinking about some wake board style speakers, until i seen the price of them...

i've got 6" speakers in the doors (pioneers, not cheap either), Kenwood 3way 6x9's in the taligate mounted on a 25mm slab of MDF covered in carpet (spaces them out and makes the tailgate a box for better bass). Powered by a 50w x4 sony deck... the deck is the cheapest part of the system and im still impressed by it. All the speakers are aluminium cones too - i had paper ones but they rotted out within about 2 years. Current speakers are about 5 years old on the fronts, and 3 years old on the rears and going strong. deck is a xplod mp3 deck and been going for 3 years, only just now getting bad contacts on the detachable face, but nothing a slap doesnt fix.

To put the volume in perspective, in the driveway listening to music at a volume of 22 or so is deafeninly loud (like, its loud, and feels like you might be doing damage to your ears)... on the freeway (100km/hr) 22 is just right to hear the lyrics over the noise of the engine/gearbox/tyres...

I think i'll be going deaf sooner rather than later =) haha

Eldo, Royce is right. about the sound deadener. It makes a world of difference. if you line your inner doors, your fire wall and even just the floor under your seats you will hear the difference. I messed with the stuff in a engineering summer class I did a few years back. It slows the small vibrations in the metal caused by driving. The speeker boxes are a good idea to.

yeah not that black tar stuff, get some proper stick on matting, just a bit in your side panels and doors and under the bonnet and firewall will make a big difference

mount the speakers on some mdf baffles as well, will stop them rattling the tin a bit

I used this stuff that you can find on ebay (it was $60 for the same stuff in my local rubber store)

1 sheet covered the bonnet with overhang. and another was split between the doors and some left over for the rear panels.

For the doors I cut it into smaller pieces and put it inside, trying one big piece was a nightmare. Its supersticky and gets stuck on the lightest touch.

i only have set of 6.5" america boss 3ways in my over head consel and 6" pioneers (definiatly not cheap) in my rear pannel cards and my pioneer headunit with aux input

i just crank the bass treble and sla up and its plenty loud enough for me

i have a pioneer deck cost about $150, i have sony explode 6x9 in the rear above the wheel arch's (have to have 1" spacer). then i have the factory 4" paper speakers in the pillar just behind the front seats (mines a shorty) and then 1 factory speaker up in the dash, i dont know why there isnt one on the passenger side, i guess they must of given up lol. i also have the wiring for an amp under the passenger seat. (all of this was in the car when bought)

When driving around with windows up i have it between 22-26, but when im doing 100kph with the windows down, i have it up around 38-40. this is in a 96' swb vitara with 235 AT's.

ahahah well i think different head units have different volume ratings. like my bro's car is on 17-19 most of the time and 19 is loud.

in mine i have a kenwood head unit with a USB in the front. I run 6" sony x-plode speakers in the kick panels.

If i am using my music, usb or cd, at 100km/h with;
roof on but windows down it has to be at around 29
roof on windows up ~ 25
roof off (bikini) windows down ~ 22
roof off windows up ~ 20

If i am listening to the radio:
roof on but windows down it has to be at around 31
roof on windows up ~ 29
roof off (bikini) windows down ~ 26
roof off windows up ~ 24

I have no sound insulation except for some marine carpet in the front and stock vinyl in the back. This is running 235 buckshots which make a litte bit of noise but are pretty good. I think all you need is a set of decent quality speakers and fine tune your head unit, maybe a little more treble if you are after clarity.

I don't know how you guys do it. I've never been able to hear anything in my zuk. I'm running 31" mudders and a G16 with 2 inch pipework. I did use spray on deadener but I think the tip I was using on the gun was too fine. I just assumed you couldn't quiet them down but I might try that rubber mat insulation if it's worked for others.

its all about the deck.... you want to get maximum power output to the speakers. I'd run an amplifier if i didnt think it would get destroyed by mud/dust/water/vibrations... lol

my old deck was 45w x4, my newer one is 50x4 and made a massive difference to the quality of the sound.

Speakers play a large part as well - but keep in mind, a lower wattage speaker is more easily "excited" - so dont go buying 50000w speakers to be powered by your 50w deck =) buy good quality lower wattage speakers and youll get way better results. As mentioned above i use aluminium coned speakers in my zuk as well, as the paper cones tend to rot out and distort more too.

sorry... im sure though when i was looking (this is years ago) that lower wattage were generally more sensitive - unless that was just at that time or something - i thought it was the easiest way to shop for speakers at the time.

hey guys im still having troubles with the uhf, its now picking up other people ok i guess, it would now with a uhf aerial.... the problem i have now is it continually clicks and makes noises, kind of like when you move your tongue off the roof of your mouth, dont know how else to describe it!!!
its annoying and i was hoping that someone else has had this before and can help me with the cause. i also still dont have the correct aerial yet as this one is supposed to be gutter mount or guard mounted and i have it on the bar. i will get the correct one soon. do you think this may be the cause?
